Miles Gloriosus or "Braggart Warrior" is one of the best-known and liveliest Roman comedies. It shows Plautus at his ablest in ingenious plot construction, vivid characterization, fast-moving action, and humorous dialogue.
This edition of the Latin text is fully and very helpfully annotated. The substantial introduction considers the antecedents of Plautus's drama in Greek New Comedy and in Italic farce, his mixture of Greek and Roman both in language and in the life portrayed, and his stagecraft, language, and meter.

Mason Hammond's commentary on Plautus's Miles Gloriosus
By Eustathios
This is a review of Mason Hammond et al.'s commentary on Plautus's play Miles Gloriosus, published by Harvard University Press. This book is a reprint of a student edition that was first published in the late 1960's. The commentators provide a 65 page introduction that is remarkably comprehensive, offering an overview of the historical development of ancient comedy as well as separate treatments of (among other things) Plautus's work and career, the conventions of the Roman stage, the musical accompaniment to Plautus's plays, the plot and staging of the Miles Gloriosus, all the Greek words used in the Miles Gloriosus, idiosyncrasies of Plautine grammar, prosody, meter, and diction, the textual transmission of Plautus's plays, the influence of Plautus and Miles Gloriosus on later European drama, and (for a student edition) a remarkably extensive bibliography on Plautus up through 1967-68. Each individual topic or sub-topic is set apart and marked with its own number, and there are 122 such sections in total. The introduction has a tendency to make overly broad generalizations and in some respects it is out-of-date, so for any research purposes one must use it with a grain of salt. But as an aid for making basic sense of the Miles Gloriosus and getting a basic grasp of the issues involved with reading Plautus, the introduction is among the most accessible, useful, and well-organized I have encountered in a student edition of a Plautine play.
This edition includes 140 pages of text and accompanying notes (located in two columns on the bottom two-thirds of the page below the text to which they refer). Miles Gloriosus is among Plautus's longest plays, running to 1437 lines in length. Unlike most dedicated student editions, there is no glossary included in this book, so it is necessary for the reader to have access to a Latin dictionary. There is also no index. The largest portion of the notes are concerned with issues of etymology and vocabulary, particularly where words are rare, accorded an unusual meaning, or carry obscure/interesting cultural connotations. Two whole pages, for example, are devoted to discussing the etymology of each of the characters' names. Less frequently, the notes provide help with grammar and syntax, metrical anomalies (in the text itself, all occurrences of synizesis are marked), problems with establishing the text, and visualizing the blocking and action on stage. The trickiest phrases will often be rendered into a very literal English translation. There is virtually no discussion of scholarship in the notes, nor are there references to parallel passages in other Plautine plays.
A second or an early third year Latin student would probably need more help (particularly with syntax) than these notes provide, and from the preface it would appear that the editors envision this book as a kind of bridge between very elementary student editions and commentaries geared primarily towards very advanced students and scholars, so perhaps a late third or a fourth year Latin student would be the ideal audience for this book. As for the play itself, the plot revolves around a conspiracy to steal a concubine from a vain and boastful soldier (in characterization, though not appearance, a very Falstaff-like individual) and unite her with the young man who loves her. The action and language are not as free-wheeling and farcical as some of Plautus's other plays (one might even go so far as to say that the play is a bit long-winded and turgid in places), but all the characters are eminently likeable and the play really draws the reader much deeper into their lives and motivations than is normally the case in one of Plautus's plays. For example, the characters engage in sober self-reflection (both alone and among themselves) with a frequency that is more typical of the comedies of Terence or even of Shakespeare, and for this reason (among many others) Miles Gloriosus stands out as a particularly notable and study-worthy play within Plautus's broader oeuvre.

This play, along with another of Plautus' works "Captivii" were combined by Stephen Sondheim to give us the musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum"
