Amazon.com Review
For millions of Americans, 'Nightline' is as much a part of the bedtime ritual as brushing their teeth. At the show's 1980 debut, Ted Koppel's detached but approachable style immediately marked him as a serious journalist, and disgruntled TV viewers sat up and took notice. Since then Koppel has continued to revolutionize the art of the television interview with his intelligence and low-key authority. With Kyle Gibson, a former 'Nightline' producer, he has authored a remarkable memoir of the show's first 16 years.

From Publishers Weekly
When the Iranians occupied the American embassy in Tehran in November 1979, ABC News went on the air every night with a program called America Held Hostage. For years ABC News chief Roone Arledge had been trying to carve a space in the 11:30 p.m. time slot opposite Johnny Carson; and the Iranian crisis allowed him a foothold. The show was a hit. In March 1980, it was renamed Nightline and Ted Koppel became the host. Over the years, the show has covered such diverse subjects as apartheid, the beginning of the AIDS epidemic and the fall of communism. Koppel, along with former Nightline producer Gibson, takes readers behind the scenes and shows the highlights (Dodger farm director Al Campanis awkwardly explaining why there are no black executives in baseball) and the lowlights (Koppel's badgering of vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro). Much of the book is dedicated to the technique of interviewing and discusses some who have sat in the hot seat, from former President Bush and televangelist Pat Robertson to Bill Clinton during the 1992 election campaign. Everything you ever wanted to know about Nightline is here, and it is a news junkie's delight.

From Booklist
Gibson, a former producer for Nightline who became an ABC correspondent and a freelance writer, supplies the narrative here; Koppel's off-camera "voice" appears in a long chapter on conducting live TV interviews and in the introduction and "final thoughts." But the on-camera words of Koppel and his Nightline guests pervade this retrospective: chapters full of excerpts from transcripts explain how and why Nightline got on the air and how it works, discuss the technological and stylistic innovations that have allowed the show to expand its journalistic envelope, and examine big stories where Nightline broke new ground (e.g., South Africa, the Mideast, AIDS, the Philippines, and the collapsing Soviet Union). The book includes "Tales from the Bookers' Vaults" and an overview of the program's town-meeting format, plus the chapter "Shows We Wish You Had Never Seen." News junkies who keep Nightline's ratings strong will relish this volume's inside scoop and savor its stroll down memory lane. Mary Carroll

How Things Work on the Job
By Area Woman
I got this book to learn more about the real-life workings of producing a highly esteemed TV news show. The book sheds a lot of insight on that. I do not, however, find it a riveting read and here's why: even though there surely must have been some women working on the crew and behind the scenes giving their input, not much is written about them. (I have not finished it yet so maybe they show up later?) So far it's just a story of well-connected men, some of whom share an alma mater, making important decisions. In other words, pretty much how every other national TV news show has been created from the 1950s until about the 1990s. Since it is so far a story of men in power making decisions that influence elections and global politics, that is not refreshing to me. That's pretty much how news has been created in in America for decades; even hundreds of years.

Ironically, producer Kyle Gibson, female co-author, who Koppel says wrote most of the book, takes a reporter's eye view on the topic and hasn't mentioned herself once yet. Part of me wonders if that's what it really takes to be successful as a woman in TV - a willingness to disappear? I don't know. I shouldn't be so critical. She did, after all, find a way to play in the big leagues of TV journalism so she must have done something right.

My advice: if you read this book look for the connections between people. Forming that map alone, either in your mind or on paper, will inform you far more about the decisions behind news more than any journalism textbook you could ever read.

By the way, none of this is meant to disparage the work of anyone, least of all Ted Koppel, who I have always thought has one of the most insightful minds in journalism. It was just depressing to see the statistics of who's in charge in media confirmed in these pages. Times have changed. That's true. Oh that they would have changed even faster.

A must-read for NIGHTLINE fans!
By A Customer
The use of statellite technology for live interviews around the globe is so ubiquitous that you almost forget a time without it. NIGHTLINE is the program that pioneered this technology and showed how it could bring newsmakers on all points of the globe together for debate and discussion.

The book recounts in well-researched detail the events that led to the birth of the program, its evolution and continued development. Fans of the show will enjoy all the nuggets of information: the circumstances that led to an unknown correspondent to be the permanent host; the selection of the name itself; details of experiments that failed.

Though billed as being by Ted Koppel and Kyle Gibson, Koppel makes it clear that the book is largely Gibson's. Gibson was a producer for the program for several years but has moved on to other posts within ABC News. This is another benefit of the book: she brings the perspective of having been an insider while not being too close to the project.

You'll enjoy the many excerpts of memorable programs and exchanges, and Koppel's hidden sense of humor shines through.

Historical, Fascinating and masterfully told.
By Rob Aboudi
This book chronicles the ABC News program Nightline from it's beginning, as a national news update special report (following local 11pm news) to inform the public of the on-going Iran hostage crisis as it continued to drag on. Nightline freed ABC news' local and national news divisions to return to every day news stories, something that it has ceased to do since the crisis began. After the hostage crisis was finally resolved Nightline continued to break ground, being the first to report on such controversial and important stores as the AIDS epidemic, for example.
Ted Koppel's first person narrative is both easy to follow, wonderfully interesting and is hard to put down. It made me respect him and the show even more than I already had, if that's even possible!
