A long time coming

Is been 22 years(I think) since David Robbins wrote the last Endworld book #27. So if you have been a fan of this series, this book is a serious welcome back. If you are new to the series, this book will stand alone and you will be introduced to the Endworld universe with a big big bang!

David has written a story here that is action packed and filled with moments that will leave you with your mouth hanging open and the feeling of "OMG did I just read that" . I have read every Endworld and I must say, this is the best one of the lot. Dont get me wrong, the others are wonderful, but this one, is just plain WOW.

Mr Robbins sucks you into the universe with characters you will fall in love with if you are a new reader, old readers will be reconnected with the characters they have already fallen in love with! New sides to characters will be revealed and events that will change the characters (and readers) forever will be revealed.

This book has the punch we have been waiting for. I can only imagine what Mr Robbins has in store for us in future books.

Endworld is back and better than ever!!!!!!

I started reading endworld around the age of 14 or so. I started collecting the books since then. I finally located all the books that are part of the series (endworld,blade), even the wilderness book that had the characters from endworld in it. Then about 10 years ago my girlfriend (ex now)and I broke up. She took my entire collection to hurt me because she was mad that I broke up with her. I did so because she cheated on me. Anyway, I mention this only because the entire series of endworld has been my number #1 favorite, always. It means the world to me to be able to pick up the first book and start re-reading the whole series every year, again and again. Since I lost the whole series I was forced to try and find them again. Only found a few and then 2 years ago I discovered audible and kindle. To be able to listen and read endworld again is amazing!! Ever since doomsday came out (endworld 0), every month I check my kindle and audible for new titles in the endworld series. To my delight I found this book yesterday. I loved it! It is everything endworld was and is. I was afraid it wouldn't be the same considering its been 20 or more years since the last book came out, but it was that and more.
The characters progressed in a way that's natural for a series like this. I love the fact that its building off of a story from endworld # 12( I think it was that one, I don't have the series to Check :-( sigh...) and blade #13 (again unsure). I remember the stories and was left wondering what might have been written if the series had continued. Now hopefully, if he continues writing for the series, I will find out!
The loss of certain characters, while sad, seems to be the start of something big, and therefore, wonderful. I hope and pray this is not the last endworld. I will be checking every month again for new books!!! Thank you David Robbins for bringing the much loved series back and giving us a taste of hopefully things to come. I am very excited to see what comes next! Bring on the next book!!!!! Please keep writing more books to add to the series!!!!

Welcome back, Endworld!

Endworld is the greatest series ever written, hands down! Dark Days is the highly anticipated, and very long awaited twenty-eighth entry in the series. Long time fans like myself have waited twenty-two years for this book. And, I couldn't be more satisfied with it!

Dark Days is a thrill ride! It has all the action, suspence and humor that you'd expect from Endworld, but with a darker, grittier feeling to it.

Dark Days may be the most emotionally powerful story in the whole Endworld series. Reading it was like having a reunion with old friends. And sadly , having to bid farewell to some of them.

This is the best book I've read in years! If you're an old fan of Endworld, you deserve to treat yourself to this book. If you've never read an Endworld book, you're missing out on something very special. Give this book a try. I know you'll fall in love with this series just like I and so many others have.

Now, I'm off to read it again. Yes, it's that good!

I don't know if I've ever been flabbergasted by an embroidery book. But I think this one did it. It's just that pretty. See, the book is huge - and I don't mean size-wise. While it's a nicely sized book (9.5" x 11", about 1/2" thick, nice cover, good quality paper, amazing color, and a satin ribbon bookmark to boot), the huge impact comes from the photos of the needlework within. This is a book that gets close and personal with all the embroidery! The whole book revolves around the photography of the twelve projects that unfold inside its cover. For every project, you'll find close-up photos that show astonishing stitching detail. This is eye candy at it's best! The projects in A Passion for Needlework range from colorful silk embroidery, to whitework embroidery, elegant monogramming, stumpwork, textured embroidery, scenic embroidery. It is quite an array! For the floral enthusiast, the book is a goldmine. You'll find Jane Nicholas's stumpwork floral creations, Susan O'Connor's contemporary interpretations of 17th century floral stitchery... ...and floral accents on delicate linen surrounding decorative initials. But there's much more than flowers here! Jenny McWhinney's "Falling Leaves" projects - which include a tree bedecked in autumn splendor and an owl surrounded by fall foliage - is especially captivating this time of year! The book is not super-heavy on instruction, though, making it more suitable, I think, for someone who is already a fairly competent stitcher - although the projects range in difficulty, so it really depends on your personal level and your motivation to work the project! Some of the instructions rely more on text than on visual aids. When reading through each project from start to finish, though, the written instructions are clear. In most cases, the designer takes you step by step through each detail. Some projects include step-by-step photos for the various techniques employed... ...while others rely on small diagrams here and there to clarify the text. In the back of the book, there's a brief stitch glossary with diagrams for all the basic stitches employed in the various projects. A MUST for dog owners

I thought I had the best dog in the world until we got another little puppy. Then, my dog became very territorial with his toys. Wanting the two dogs to love each other forever, I got this book because it was recommended by the local German Shepherd rescue.
Most of the things in the book I had already done with my first dog, but the writers explained why my dog was acting this way with his toys and how to correct it.
My two dogs share toys now and don't fight (other that puppy play).
Sometimes it is hard to 'think like a dog', but you have to in order to communicate with yours. These writers must be part-dog, and the book is very effective.

The answer to an obedience trainer/behaviorist's prayer

This book is the most succinct, well-written treatise in print on what is takes to own a dog. A previous review of this book criticized it because it discusses the dog's ancestry to the wolf and ignored the years of domestication of dogs. The wolf ancestry of domestic dogs cannot be ignored when owning a dog. Alot of people are not meant to be dog owners or should only own certain breeds. This book delivers critical information on behaviorism. We teach dog training using Karen Pryor's technique's of positive reinforcement, but this alone is not enough to be a successful dog owner. Owning a dog is a lot of work and owning a rottweiler is not the same as owning a golden retriever. People must understand the canine psyche and be equipped with the knowledge of how to demonstrate pack leadership over a dog, along with training, in order to have a 'good dog'. Pack leadership is needed along with the principles of positive reinforcement to elicit good canine behavior. One is not a replacement for the other. This book is required reading for the beginner dog class. It equips the students with the knowledge of canine behaviorism they need. Every dog owner should have this book. Every potential dog owner should read this book and use it to decide if they are meant to be a dog owner. It is an excellent book.

Practical solutions to canine dominance problems here!

This is the best text for owners who are having difficulty attaining leadership status with their dogs. The lessons are written in plain English while drawing on sound, non-confrontational behavioral theory.
The authors take the angle of basing each lesson on what is known about the functioning of a wolf pack. The position of dominant vs. lower-ranking wolves is explored. Who eats first? Who sleeps where? Who initiates play? Who goes through narrow passageways first?
Especially interesting to me was the explanation of how meaningful body posture and physical positioning is to dogs.
I especially recommend this book to dog trainers working with the general public or to any dog owner whose dog who perhaps has JUST BEGUN to exhibit dominant behaviors such as pulling on the leash, ignoring known commands, guarding of food or objects, or giving warning growls when disciplined.
I would not recommend this book to owners trying to correct biting problems with a dog who already has a history of fear or dominance aggression. If that is your problem, you need to ask your vet for a referral to an animal behaviorist.

Gary Cunningham has just written an updated book on United States bayonets. His book, entitled U.S. Knife Bayonets & Scabbards: A Collectors Guide. 2015, is published by Scott Duff Publications. Crammed full of incredible black & white photos, it is an update of his 1997 book. It is a guide to help identify original bayonets, not a price guide. The book is a great reference for the novice having a bayonet passed down or the casual collector that wants to purchase a correct, non-replica bayonet for his or her U.S. military rifle. It is arranged chronologically and reviews most blade bayonets one would encounter at a gun show, in an attic, or at a auction. Its primary focus is on U.S. bayonets dating from the Krag rifle in the 1890s up to the current issue military blade bayonets.

Cunningham’s 1997 edition has many line drawings. In contrast, this new 2015 edition has hundreds of macro-detail, descriptive photos. There are images of the bayonets and their scabbards. In addition, there are many more photos of close up views showing the blade, handle, hilt, scabbard construction as well as macro detailed views offering a clear visual of the stamped marker’s marks and a wide variety of other manufacturers’ attributes. The guide’s strong point is how closely each bayonet is scrutinized through a series of photographic records. The photography is excellent and its visuals are an important contribution to the text. In an effort to ID a bayonet, the author provides for the lay reader a text specific to each bayonet, photos in an effort to glean more information about the descriptive details, and provides bayonet measurement specifications within a box format. The author reviews the general major bayonet variations and their modifications made to each specific bayonet over its use. As stated, he does not cover the Civil War or earlier U.S. bayonets. In addition, some very rare, seldom found, post-1890 bayonets are omitted.

Cunningham’s goal is to provide a concise guide offering the intermediate or novice collector a photographic balance between too little detail for a collector and too much written detail for the novice so they can identify just what bayonet they actually see. They can use this guide to help determine the correct type for their rifle, as well as the authenticity of a bayonet and avoid the many reproductions on the market. The general military reader and collector alike will find this resource a welcome addition to their library. It has an excellent bibliography, the quality of the paper is top grade, photography is fantastic and details are clearly visible, and Cunningham’s text is well written. The only thing I would have preferred to have seen is a chapter on reproduction/replica U.S. bayonets. If you own a surplus military rifle, then you need a bayonet to complete your display.

A highly anticipated refresh is delivered!

72USMC's review of this book is spot on. I received my copy yesterday and the additional bayonet, scabbard, and contractual data added since the last publication make this book worth the purchase price if you are new to the hobby, a seasoned salt, or someone just trying to validate what you have. The book is clearly laid out with a complete table of contents and bibliography making it easy to find the information you are looking for. The pictures, both black/white and colored are clear and vivid. While the author mentions and warns the reader of some of the characteristics of common reproductions and fakes, I wish he would have included pictures of some of those in the book. I also wish he could have used more color photography but then I imagine his book would not have been affordable to the majority of the people who enjoy this hobby. If you are looking for a one stop shop for the bayonets used in the period covered, this is it. I have been collecting military items for several years and I find this book to be a great addition to my reference library and highly recommend it.

A qualified "thumbs up"

This is a tough call, but on the whole I am giving this novel 4 stars because it successfully held my attention, got me engaged in trying to understand the characters' motives and is beautifully written. Having said that, I want to acknowledge that many of the criticisms leveled here by other Amazon reviewers do have merit, primarily the charge that Updike's characters are often stereotypical. Of interest to me is that, while many reviewers complained about the stereotypes of fat wives, Arab-Americans and single mothers, I didn't notice any comments on the characters of African-American school girl Joryleen and her boyfriend, who is named "Tylenol," of all things. But in any case, since the stereotype issues have been well covered by other reviewers, I'm going to let that go and focus on what I see as the positives of this novel, and there really are quite a few.

For one thing, I like the fact that Updike chose this very difficult topic to write about and also made obvious efforts to understand aspects of Islamic-American culture that are doubtless utterly foreign to him. An author of his standing could just coast for the rest of his career, but this writer chose to stretch himself and try to get inside the mind of a character that represents a far more complex America than that of Rabbit, for example. This is an America that we had all better take a shot at understanding, since this is the one we are living in today, and will have to go on living in for some time to come. Believers in Islam are here and they are becoming an ever more important force in the polyglot US -- AND it is pretty clear that many of these folks are severely disaffected from the mainstream culture. *If* this alienation tends to encourage violent actions, then those of us who are of the so-called "majority" culture had better spend some time trying to understand why that is, and think about how we can help these new US residents succeed here. (That's a big IF, since it seems perfectly plausible to me that cultural alienation does not lead to "homegrown" terrorism at all. But for the purposes of this review, I am assuming that it could.)

Another positive of this novel is that it is beautifully written and highly evocative of place. The place happens to be a depressingly urbanized New Jersey, so it's easy to miss the power of Updike's descriptions, but consider this passage: "...the sky cloudless but for a puffy far scatter over Long Island, the ozone at the zenith so intense it seems a smooth-walled pit of blue fire, the accumulated towers of lower Manhattan a single gleaming mass, speedboats purring and sailboats tilting in the bay, the cries and conversation of the tourist crowd making a dapple of harmless sound around them. 'This beauty,' Ahmad thinks 'must mean something -- a hint from Allah, a foreshadow of Paradise.'

As for the criticism that Updike is anti-American and using the character of Ahmad to voice his own complaints, I counter by saying that it's important for us Americans to be more self-reflective than we may find comfortable, and that Updike is contributing something useful by raising important moral and ethical challenges to our behavior as a nation in the world. Take for example this line from pp. 198-9 of the novel: "[True adherents] believe that a billion followers of Islam need not have their eyes and ears and souls corrupted by the poisonous entertainments of Hollywood and a ruthless economic imperialism whose Christian-Jewish God is a decrepit idol, a mere mask concealing the despair of atheists."

Granted, that is powerful stuff and certainly discomfiting. But if one reads any of the world's press at all, it is pretty clear that this is the image that many people have of America, and the challenge Updike's characters are presenting in this novel seem to me to be worth considering. What sort of response shall we give to a comment like the above? How observant of our religious principles are the majority of us here in the US, and what about the economic fallout of our national trade and security policies? I am not saying that I agree with the assessments of the characters in this novel, nor do I necessarily think we should assume Updike does. But it is a view that we might at least consider if we hope to come to peaceable terms with the billions of Muslims who are solid citizens of this and the world's other nations, and who have no hostile intentions.

So, for me, the bottom line on Terrorist is that it's an important book that raises difficult questions that ought to be given some serious thought. We should be glad that Updike chose to write it.

Terrorist is the final novel of John Updike and could have been written today as it deals with contemporary issues such as broken families, school bullies, the gap between reality and idealism and one young man's mission. I highly recommend it.

Compelling

John Updike is back, and is again surprising his loyal readers. This time he engages with a powerful fiction that deals with themes of terrorism, religious fundamentalism, and the search for meaning.

Terrorist is the story of Ahmad Ashmawy Malloy, a seventeen-year-old child of an Irish-American mother and an Egyptian father who abandoned the family before Ahmad could form memories of him. When Ahmad turned eleven, he began pursuing his paternal heritage and converted to Islam. For Ahmad, Central High is as sea of temptation--gangs, drugs, and sexual openness; devils which attempt to lure him off the Straight Path.

Terrorist is also the story of Jack Levy, a depressed, nearly retired guidance counselor at Central High. Jack is a secular Jew, raised by a father who favored the promises of capitalism over the ancient covenant between God and his people. And now at the twilight of his career, Jack is overwhelmed by the purposelessness of his life. Instead of becoming a comic writer for Jackie Gleeson, Jack is trapped as a guidance counselor in a dilapidated school, serving teens who aren't interested in his advice.

Jack's responsibilities as guidance counselor entangles is purposeless life with the religious fervor of the soon-to-graduate Ahmad. Conflict mounts as Ahmad falls in with a newly immigrated Lebanese family and their jihad; while Jack grasps for significance in an extra-marital affair.

Terrorist is a tightly written thriller. Updike is known for his literary craftsmanship and he doesn't disappoint in his latest offering. I found myself pausing and rereading many of his descriptive passages out of utter enjoyment. Updike plunges the reader into the mind of a youthful, na�ve zealot and an aging cynic, all the while driving the plot forward with determined suspense. Updike keeps the reader in a state of fright right through the closing moments of the book.

Terrorist is about the search for meaning; Updike's rich characters pursue significance through religion, sex, materialism, and intellectual conceit. And every character is confronted with the realization that their bait is not catching fulfillment.

If there's a flaw to be found with Terrorist, it's that Updike traffics in stereotypes, only some of which are fair. Ahmed's propensity toward extremism is born out of growing up fatherless in blighted New Prospect. Jack is a humanist who bears the weight of knowing there is no God. Through his wife, Beth, Baptists are painted as fundamentalist cousins, separated only by degrees of violence.
Yet Updike brings these typecasts to life like a master marionette operator and the reader forgets the woodenness of the stereotype. He does with unflinching relational realism; and so a caution: strong language and a few bedroom scenes populate the book.

I strongly recommend Terrorist. It's relevant to today's headlines and I expect that its craftsmanship will keep this novel poignant for decades to come. The discerning reader will not only be entertained by the life and death drama, but challenged by the questions of meaning and belief.
