Dorothy Thompson (1893-1961) was America’s first internationally famous female foreign correspondent. Thompson was married three times: her second marriage was to the American novelist, Nobel Prize-winner, and alcoholic Sinclair Lewis; her third and happiest, to Czech artist Maxim Kopf. She also had several lesbian relationships. Avidly interested in everything from sustainable farming to the fine arts, she divided her later years between New York City and her farm in Barnard, Vermont. (With 83 illustrations.)

Pioneering Woman Journalist

If you ask the average American to name a female reporter, most will be hard-pressed to name anyone besides Dear Abby or Ann Landers. These two "Agony Aunts" were sisters and today their daughters and others write their columns. Few Americans can name a woman journalist.

The history of discrimination against women journalists goes back to colonial America. Then came Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman who wrote under the pen name of Nellie Bly. She showed that a woman journalist could do serious muckraking. Her example inspired Dorothy Thompson who was born July 9,1893 in Lancaster, New York.

Peter Kurth has written an excellent biography of this pioneering woman journalist, tracing her life from her childhood in western New York, her journalism career, and marriages and divorces. After divorcing her first husband Josef Bard, she married author Sinclair Lewis in 1928. She divorced Lewis in 1942.

In 1920, she traveled to Europe and wrote free-lance pieces for several U.S. newspapers including the Christian Science Monitor. In 1924, the Philadelphia Public Ledger appointed her their Berlin bureau chief, which made Thompson the first woman to head a major overseas news bureau.

She is notable as the first American journalist to be expelled from Nazi Germany (in 1934), and began a crusade against dictatorship and other forms of fascism. Concerning our current U.S. president, she predicted:

"No people ever recognize their dictator in advance. He never stands for election on the platform of dictatorship ... When our dictator turns up you can depend on it that he will be one of the boys, and he will stand for everything traditionally American. And nobody will ever say 'Heil' to him, nor will they call him 'F�hrer' or 'Duce'. But they will greet him with one great big, universal, democratic, sheeplike bleat of 'O.K., Chief! Fix it like you wanna, Chief! Oh Kaaaay!' "

Terrific bio of a terrific and terrible woman

I picked this book up by mistake several years ago. I thought it was a bio of Dorothy Parker. It was possibly the best mistake I ever made. Thompson is now a forgotten figure, somehow escaping the accolades heaped upon her peers.
Yet she was a fantastic and inovative woman, breaking new career paths and new ideas. Sure, she wasn't the most likeable of people. But with Thompson that's not the point.
This book has sent me on a five year quest to gather all of the information I can about her, from her book "I Saw Hitler" to collections of her essays. I've been on a tangential search for every thing relating to her I can get my hands on.
And it's all because Kurth wrote a spectacular and engaging biography.

Sad that her career was destroyed by her criticism of Israel. Up until 1945, her anti-Nazi and pro-Zionist credentials were impeccable. What she saw in Palestine totally changed her outlook. She began to write that the proposed establishment of the State of Israel was a formula for disaster, “a recipe for perpetual war” in the Middle East. During her 1945 trip, she discovered that Zionism was not “the liberal crusade that the Zionist leaders envisaged”, and that Israel was to be “not a small state of Jews who chose to live in Israel, but a Zionist state destined to become the leading power in the Middle East.”

Each page opened up new insights into the dangers of international business travel which, unless you have served as an intelligence collector in the CIA, you would have little idea how to thwart. The informal (and witty) language makes it a fun read, but it is very informative as well. Highly recommended for business travelers.

When traveling you have to stay alert. You may have been targeted without even knowing it. Learn to tell the signs. Read this book. Spies, thieves and stalkers can easily recruit staff working at cafes, hotels, airports, restaurants or buss-stations. You may be drugged at the cafe and then robbed in your hotel room. Some taxi drivers may be in on it too. Lots of freelancing con-men and surplus spies around. They often work in groups. Be aware, that in some places police officers, health care workers, military personnel, public servants, staff at pharmacies and even firemen may be helping the criminals. Recommended reading for all business travelers carrying sensitive business information or intellectual property. Government agencies have control over wireless networks in airports and big hotels whereas freelancing industrial spies and con-men may have hotel staff, taxi drivers or others on their payroll. Stalker-T.I's may find the book useful too since gang-stalkers play spies... According to the book industrial-espionage is a crime that goes almost unnoticed. The same is true of organized-stalking. Both are invisible crimes that the police or media rarely pick up on. By the way, the writer has some interesting advice on how to behave when being stalked by industrial spies or con-men: Don't ever try to out-smart them. If you do, they will make the rest of your business-trip a nightmare. (They become vindictive if the Target tries to reveal them). And - from then on - they will undermine your business-dealings in every way they possibly can. Pretend you don't know they are spying on you and take precautions. For instance, never leave your electronic devices or passport out of sight. This is a highly readable book with hands-on advice. (The writer is a former FBI industrial and economic espionage expert)

Solid Information

So interesting and easy to read that I couldn't stop reading, with concise descriptions and information of danger zones and things to not do when traveling in order to protect business data from espionage. The book is crammed full of good suggestions.

If you travel at all, you need this book even if you don't have any intellectual property to protect. It's got plenty of examples of situations and how to avoid them, such as preventing theft at airports, crossing borders with a laptop computer, hotel thefts, room bugging, along with relevant war stories in counter-intelligence. It will sensitize you to be on guard when encountering overly friendly strangers in foreign nations by describing signs that you are being "recruited", or a target. You will discover how amazingly easy it is to lose proprietary information and secret data by inattention to details.

This is one of those rare books that I make a core part of my business library, because it is that good.

5++ “I’m married to them” Stars!!

!!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!! Do not read this review without reading the first two books in this series

One of my favorite stories has come to an end and I am happy and sad. Happy, happy, happy with that ending, but so sad to see Cal/Chris and Lauren go. This series has been a wild rollercoaster ride that I have loved every moment of. Book 1 threw me for a loop with the whole Cal/Chris ending. And then book 2 broke my heart as Lauren learned the truth and tried to figure out where to go next. Then Beautifully Broken took it to a whole new level with all the past coming out!!

“Does he decide? Do you decide? Is there a ******* schedule that I can get a copy of? Because this is insane.”

Many lives are changed in Beautifully Broken when Cal comes back in the picture, and all the secrets start to SLOWLY come out! And, wow, we aren’t just rocked once with a whopper, we are given TWO shocking secrets that change everything for Cal/Chris. And Lauren…I felt so bad for her, but yet was so pleased with the way she handled everything about this series. She handled everything with such maturity, when I would have thrown my hands in the air and walked away from that disaster. LOL!!

“He looks broken and I think I broke him. I broke Cal and I broke Chris.”

I am usually all about the alpha bad boy character, but found myself pulling for Chris ever since book 2. I know, I know, they are the same person but I totally fell for Chris’s compassionate personality…plus, he did have a little alpha in there somewhere if Cal came from him ;) And in Beautifully Broken he finally got it together and decided it was time for him to take his life back, which made me admire him even more.

“This isn’t the end of the world. It’s just split my world in two. That’s all. I have to get it together.”

As I said before, Lauren’s character was one of my all-time favorite female characters. She had such maturity, spunk, understanding, and kindness. The girl put up with so much more than any one wife should ever have to. And for the most part, always did it with class. Her support and patience is what won me over in this story. There was no annoying whiney female, except Jenna, and that made this reader very happy.

“After everything I thought that we could all get our happy ending, but the longer this goes on the more it looks like no one’s going to get it.”

I swear this series has to be one of my all-time favorites and I really am sad to see it end. I sure hope the author has more ideas ready to go, because I can’t wait to get my hands on more of her work :)

Great series!!

I love it when I can find a book that isn't predictable, which is rare, this series wasn't predictable in the least. It has every element you could want. It felt a bit like a roller coaster ride with ups and downs and sudden jerks to the side, I loved it. I wasn't sure how the writer was going to pull off the ending of this but she did it perfectly. Would definitely recommend to others!

OMG... This series was off the hook!

I downloaded the first book in this series for free just looking for something new to read....it sucked me in and I read the first two and a half books in a matter of two days and impatiently awaited this one for a couple months! It didn't disappoint! I highly recommend this book and series
