Jack O'Connell possessed an uncanny ability to be at the center of things. On his arrival in Jordan in 1958, he unraveled a coup aimed at the young King Hussein, who would become America's most reliable Middle East ally. Over time, their bond of trust and friendship deepened.

His narrative contains secrets that will revise our understanding of the Middle East. In 1967, O'Connell tipped off Hussein that Israel would invade Egypt the next morning. Later, as Hussein's Washington counselor, O'Connell learned of Henry Kissinger's surprising role in the Yom Kippur War.

The book's leitmotif is betrayal. Hussein, the Middle East's only bona fide peacemaker, wanted simply the return of the West Bank, seized in the Six-Day War. Despite American promises, the clear directive of UN Resolution 242, and the years of secret negotiations with Israel, that never happened. Hussein's dying wish was that O'Connell tell the unknown story in this book.

O'Connell, a former CIA agent and attorney for Jordan's King Hussein, recounts four decades of Middle East history in this provocative memoir. The author, CIA station chief in Amman from 1963 to 1971, was delegated to "keep King Hussein in power" and served as the young king's main point of contact and channel to the U.S. Following his retirement from the CIA, O'Connell became Hussein's U.S. attorney and Jordan's American lobbyist until the king's death in 1999. Drawing on his unique access, the author argues that while the Arabs wanted an end to hostilities and Hussein relentlessly pursued secret negotiations with the Israelis, neither Israel nor the U.S. wanted or actively pursued peace. O'Connell characterizes U.S. diplomacy in the region as hypocritical and charges that Kissinger fomented the 1973 Yom Kippur war. He also contends that the U.S. was doing Israel's "dirty work" in opposing Saddam Hussein in 1990 and could have negotiated an Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait without resorting to war. O'Connell's eyewitness account of a tragic era in a tumultuous region is long on drama, revealing vignettes, and controversy, but short on balance. More than memoir, this is a passionate brief for King Hussein and the Arab pursuit of peace. (May)

About the Author
Jack O'Connell (1921-2010) served as CIA station chief in Amman, Jordan, from 1963 to 1971 and was King Hussein's most trusted American adviser. He then became the king's attorney and diplomatic counselor in Washington for three decades.

Excellent and revelatory book

Author Jack O'Connell used his connections as a former CIA agent and his years in the Middle East to write with a degree of behind-the-scenes knowledge that is remarkable. There is a lot of insight here of a kind that cannot readily be acquired from a distance or through standard journalism. The writing also is extremely good purely as prose, flowing along easily and vividly.

This is not a scholarly or broad history book. It is very much a memoir, one man's exceptionally knowledgeable view of many significant developments in the Mideast over the course of about half a century. To compare it to a few other books by former CIA agents, this book is wider ranging and less cautious than Bruce Riedel's excellent "The Search for Al Qaeda," and more focused and less emotional than Michael Scheuer's "Marching Toward Hell."

The relations between Jordan, Israel and the United States take center stage. The details are fascinating, to such an extent that I wondered whether this book had any trouble with the CIA possibly wanting to suppress some details. The author died before publication, but I do not know whether the author planned on posthumous publication to give himself more freedom in his writing.

O'Connell describes many of the cynicisms, misjudgments and outright stupidities of U.S. diplomacy, but his overall characterization of U.S. Mideast policy is: Whatever Israel wants, Israel gets. Whether that is a fair judgment, each reader can decide. But even a reader who feels O'Connell's judgment is skewed by fondness for King Hussein can learn a lot here.

Useful, Unconventional and opinionated

This memoir represents a pro-Jordanian outlook and a strong critique of Israeli policy. It is also critical of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 (now widely regarded as a strategic mistake) and more surprisingly of Operation Desert Storm in 1991 (when Saddam was a lot more dangerous). The author's approach will therefore almost certainly anger a number of readers, while others will agree with him. Under these circumstances, readers are advised to consider the book an opinionated but sincere last testament of a CIA officer who believed the United States needed to fundamentally alter its Middle Eastern policies. The remaining question is did he lose perspective on key issues and especially the nature and goals of the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq. However one answers this concern, O'Connell was definitely a part of the history that he describes, and while his views can be criticized, the importance of his vantage point makes him a valuable historical asset. Additionally, Jordan has over many years proven to be an important U.S. ally in the struggle against terrorism and other forms of violent extremism, and to this extent O'Connell was clearly correct in his analysis. Credible Insight!

As one who worked for the Intelligence Community for 48 years, taught strategic intelligence warning at the national level and facilitated case studies of past intelligence successes and failure, this book filled in so many knowledge gaps. I have always admired King Hussein, but often wondered how he walked the fine line between being the guardian of the Heshamite Kingdom and truly wanting peace in the Middle East. The author's direct knowledge of King Hussein's initiatives is priceless and I am so thankful that he wrote this book. He omits at least a couple of conversations between the King and Sadaam Hussein, which my still be classified or he just chose not to discuss, which may have darkened the King's role ever so slightly, but overall this book rates as one of the best I have ever read. He tells a story that no one else could possibly know. Highly recommended.

Valuable Synthesis Presented Abstractly and Ponderously

If you haven't read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, I suggest you read that one before this book.

Dr. Covey obviously pulled out all of the stops in trying to make this book as helpful as possible to his readers. The book contains summaries of the material in his other books, repeats many stories from those books, reconciles the material with most of the business book best sellers in recent years, contains a DVD full of inspiring videos, provides references to many free materials on his web site, has extensive appendices and contains many thoughtful sections on questions and answers. As a result, the book comes across like an encyclopedia of his teachings . . . rather than as the simple communication that is so delightful in his other books. I suspect that Dr. Covey changed ghostwriters for this one (at least I assume that the other books were ghostwritten because they avoid the ponderous communications style that Dr. Covey uses in person).

So what is the 8th habit? Allow me to paraphrase. It'll be quicker that way. You act with integrity as an individual and help others to do the same.

In Covey-speak, it's the overlap of personal greatness (applying the 7 habits in the forms of vision, discipline, passion and conscience), leadership greatness (applying the 4 roles of leadership (modeling the 7 habits, path finding, aligning and Empowering), and organizational greatness (turned into a vision, mission and values that bring clarity, commitment, translation, synergy, enabling and accountability). See Figure 14.3 on page 280 for the simplest expression of the 8th habit in Covey-speak.

Can you make a book out of that point? Well, if you put in lots of examples, you can . . . which Dr. Covey did. But the basic point is about a magazine article's worth. Most people will come to that realization when they see the entire book's concepts summarized in chapters 14 and 15. If you want to check this book out, read those two chapters and see if you need more at that point.

Why do millions of people read his books? Well, the earlier ones were beautifully written. This one isn't. All of his books show unadulterated respect for the reader and a belief in the reader's unlimited potential to improve. So it's inspiring to read someone's high opinion of you. Dr. Covey obviously cares that we live moral and positive lives. He's a sort of secular priest expressing moral values that most will agree with. Would we all like to work for Dr. Covey? Sure!

How well will this book translate in the workplace? It'll be a tough row. You can have a company that's good at the 8th habit, but doesn't build the necessary skills to succeed with using the 8th habit. That's because this book is heavy on concepts . . . and light on the practical details. Dr. Covey starts up at about 100,000 feet in the air with his abstract thinking and discussions, and rarely gets any closer. So think of the 8th habit book as helpful . . . but not sufficient in and of itself . . . for creating superior performance. Perhaps it will work better if you employ Dr. Covey's firm to help you (which is abundantly pitched in the book).

Dr. Covey humbly points out that his conclusions are aimed at dealing with the problems of poor communication, lousy alignment, misunderstandings about what to do next, lacks of tools and training, and dumbed-down workplaces . . . but is not supported by research (other than anecdotes from his clients) to support that this actually works better. But you'll agree, I'm sure, that even failure would feel a lot better in such an organization. So it's very humanistic, which is a good thing.

Few will disagree with the point of this book, and most wonder what this adds to Dr. Covey's work on Principle-Centered Leadership. "Not very much" is my impression.

I suspect that this book would have worked a lot better if the material had been simplified and added to the 7 habits book . . . and renamed as "The 8 Habits of Highly Effective People."

Topical, but tedious

As with most of his previous writings, Dr. Covey has a great point to get across and does an excellent job of motivating it and presenting it in a way that makes it easy to apply to yourself. Unfortunately, unlike his other books, this one was a bit tedious to get through. The mixture of inspirational content (quotes and motivational passages), reiteration of concepts, mapping of his concepts onto the presentations of others in the leadership and self-help community, and just general pacing added up to make this far longer than I would've preferred. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody who isn't a speed reader.

Profound, inspiring, a must read

When I got my hands on a pre-release copy of this book, I expected to enjoy it, simply because his classic, THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE, has had such a powerful impact on my personal and professional life. But in no way was I prepared for this new book to be so inspiring and riviting, and to speak so clearly and insightfully to my present challenges and desires for my life.

With THE 8TH HABIT, Covey not only acknowledges the on-going need to be effective in today's world, but puts his finger on the human hunger for meaning, contribution, and significance--what he calls "greatness"--and then provides a roadmap for individuals and organizations to achieve it.

You know it's one thing to identify, as his research does, just how disengaged, frustrated, disempowered and straitjacketed most people are in the organizations they work for, but it's another to give insight into how we can actually realize the kind of positive change we desire in our lives, our homes, and in the teams and organizations we are part of.

I love and was moved by the personal examples and experiences Covey shares. It's another great blend of principles and practical, inspiring stories. I also love how the focus is not just centered on oneself. Yes, we can and need to "find our voice," but the equal and perhaps greater key to life lies in "inspiring others to find their voice." That's the leadership challenge--whether it be with your children or with those you work with.

I believe this may very well be Covey's most important and significant work--an idea whose time has come.

Robert Koehler is a 34-year-old (as of 2009) executive editor of a Seoul-based culture and lifestyle magazine. A native Long Islander and a graduate of Georgetown University, Robert has lived in Korea since 1997, mostly as an English teacher, graduate student and newspaper translator. When he's not at work, Robert can usually be found at his home in Seoul's multicultural Itaewon neighborhood spending quality time with his loving wife Solongo or traveling around Korea snapping photos--he has a particular fondness for early-modern and colonial-era architecture.

Hangeul in one small, neat package

This fun little book is informative, well-written, and eye-catchingly illustrated.

The first five chapters were particularly interesting to me, covering the alphabet's history and why it has been praised by linguists so long after its development in the 15th century. Chapter five discusses why women took to the alphabet first and the disparaging names sometimes given to Hangeul in the old days: as an alphabet for women or children, vulgar, or "outhouse" writing. A small piece on how the Indonesian Cia-Cia people have adopted the script is touching and thought-provoking as well.

The book really does a great job at capturing the variety and beauty of Hangeul fonts and uses, and although praise of the alphabet seems to almost comically know no bounds for the authors, the graphics on Hangeul's use in the arts, in technology, and the pages of various typefaces really are outstanding, showing the beauty of this most rational of scripts. There's a handy section at the end of the book on places to study Korean, online and offline, and I must say it's very tempting...

Book on the original Korean Alphabet

I already knew that Hangul, or Hangeul, was and is a highly regarded original new alphabet created for Koreans by their own leadership in the 16th century. This book provided more detailed information on Hanguil and added a lot to my knowledge. It is unfortunately rather repetitive and written by persons who don't know much about scientific linguistics, so they use some words (like "phonemic") in confusing ways -- but this is the best I've found so far. The bibliography may lead further on and well.

What a great tool for aspiring chefs. This book combines practical information with life inspiration. Chef Timothy Tucker's life's work is to help people learn to cook delicious real food in professional kitchens — his book is crystal clear about everything an aspiring chef will need to know to make a difference in the kitchen and in life.

While the book is written for adults, I'll be using this book as a textbook in the teaching kitchen at my Montessori school. By demystifying the process of preparing delicious and healthy food, Chef Timothy has given teachers, students and inspiring chefs a great gift.

Practical guide for beginning chefs!

Designed as a textbook to be used in a culinary training program for beginning chefs, "Destination Chef" orients emerging food-service professionals to the essential skills and understandings of the profession. Chef Tucker's years of experience in both the food-service industry and in teaching is evident throughout the thoughtful lessons which are simple to follow and feature engaging visuals and charts.

The book addresses the expected topics of kitchen equipment, food basics, and recipes then moves beyond to offer information on typically less discussed but equally important topics such as menu design, food ordering, working with vendors and farmers, and how to determine the total cost of an individual meal on the menu.

What I found particularly valuable about 'Destination Chef' is the wealth of information it provides on professional skills. Other books and resources tend to be too vague or fall short but not this book! "Destination Chef" delivers what it's title promises and walks the student through resume and cover letter writing, interview prep, and salary negotiation. The emphasis is not just on food service skills but getting the job AND being successful in your position.

About the Author
Daniel Wallace is the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: The New Essential Guide to Characters, as well as many more books that explore the underpinnings of the Star Wars universe including The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force and Book of Sith: Secrets of the Dark Side. He has written for other universes, too, including Indiana Jones, Smallville, Supernatural, DC Comics, and Marvel Comics.

From its Tatooine orbit, the Alliance Forces acquired Boba Fett's starship. Within Slave I's cockpit, a treasure of secret materials were discovered. Finally shedding light on the shadowy underworld of bounty hunting, the contents can now be yours! "The Bounty Hunter Code" is the newest in a line of hybrid goodies that combine expanded universe books and high-end toys. Here we have the guide to the Bounty Hunters' Guild. The beautiful hard cover book comes in a 'blast proof strongbox.' As with the vault editions of "The Book of Sith" and "The Jedi Path," it lights up and makes cool sounds when activated. First, two buttons must be simultaneously pressed to trigger the opening of the front panel. This movement reveals the data slot. Second, when the accompanying data card is inserted, the lid finally opens. The event's fanfare is a tapestry of sound bites that include a thermal detonator, a Geonosian sonic blaster and a seismic charge. It is disappointing that operation of the strongbox is temperamental. Button performance can be flakey and there are times when the entire fanfare won't play. As with the outside of the strongbox, the book is handsomely embroidered with a Mandalorian skull. It comes with surprises like Boba Fett's driver's license and a wanted poster for Han Solo. Don't worry, if you can't read Galactic Basic, the poster has an English translation. The book itself was initially owned by Bossk and Greedo. Most recently, it was Boba Fett's. All three owners marked up the book with hand written notes. It is especially entertaining to read Boba's responses with regards to the original text and the previous owners. Topics include a history of the profession, the creed, tools of the trade and suggested techniques for capturing and disintegrating targets. The monograph is beautifully written and illustrated. As a bonus, it is accompanied by "Making A Killing," a paperback memoir by Gradossk, head of the guild. Last but certainly not least, the package comes with one of the most notorious symbols of the trade, a Kaminoan Saber Dart. Ever wonder what it takes to be a bounty hunter? Now you can read all about the galaxy's most dangerous profession thanks to the deluxe edition of "The Bounty Hunter Code."

It was pretty intriguing and well enough written for the avid Star ...

I bought the book of the Sith and was actually rather impressed with the amount of content they fit into the little thing. It was pretty intriguing and well enough written for the avid Star Wars fan. This book on the other hand is just boring. Lists of equipment from the Star Wars universe isn't much to read. Very little of the book (less than half) has to do with the Bounty Hunter's guild. The only worthwhile section was on the Deathwatch, but it was still less than twenty pages.

Definitely get the Deluxe version -- worth it!

For adult SW fans who enjoy a book that puts them "in-universe" into the Saga, I highly recommend this book as well as the related Jedi Manual, Book of Sith, and Imperial Handbook. These books are immersive and really give the reader background into the SW universe. The deluxe editions have super-worth-it bonuses like the mechanically opening case with lights and sound, plus various little removable artifacts that enhance the feeling of getting to read a book that's from the library of Boba Fett.
These books are fun to read and also nice collectibles.
