Excellent guide to design and analysis a coil in MRI

In spite of the importance of a coil in MRI, such as gradient and RF coil, there are few books on it. So many books on MRI. But they have been focused only on the imaging method or the basic principles of MRI.
This is the only guide book on RF and gradient coil, as I have found, and deals with current topics on the analysis and design on the hardware of MRI. Also, the references on each topics are well arranged and very useful.

More need for books on NMR hardware design

The book "Electromagnetic Analysis and Design" by Jianming Jin is one of the very few books that covers hardware aspects of NMR. The book gives a clear overview of the theory behind the design of both gradient coils and rf coils. What I missed somehow in the book is a more hands-on approach and references on how to really start designing one's own NMR coils.

Detailed coverage of a wild opening

The Philidor had a reputation as being "dead" for so many reasons. However, using the Pirc move order some interesting and wild positions can be achieved if you have a strong heart.

First, this book is not for beginners or even average tournament players. It will take a lot of work, experience, and insight to get through the dense material. Just reading the main sections, it seems apparent (from an experienced chess coach's perspective), that you would need to be a very high B class player (upper 1700's) to even consider the book. Ideally you need to be at least an A class player to understand the basics of this book. If you don't know what "B class/A class" means, then you should definitely skip this book.

Second, this opening is not for the faint of heart or the one who lacks imagination. This is not a "black to play and win" book. It is an honest exploration of the opening from a GM perspective... a GM who plays the opening. I would describe it more of a "black to play and fight to the bitter end."

The first half of the book describes the Philidor move order (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6) and its dangers. The last half deals with achieving a Philidor position (generally playable to good for Black) through a Pirc move order (1.e4 d6 followed by 2... Nf6). In what seems to be typical opening book organization, it starts with unusual lines and moves to main lines. (Read: thorough by anemic on what you will see in current practice.)

As a coach, I appreciate Bauer's teaching technique because he starts with typical pawn structures (how they are achieved, what they accomplish, and who stands better). Pawn structures dictates strategy and tactics in the Philidor. Also, Bauer has a slightly off-beat sense of humor that keeps the reader between a light hearted groan and an outright chuckle.

Dennis L. Wilson is wrong!

This book has its faults. No bibliography, a lot of the lines are just database dumps and there are comp improvements. However, what the reviewer Dennis L. Wilson claims is just plain wrong. I ran an analysis with Fritz 8 with 600 seconds per move and it comes up with = (0.13). Black is OK indeed. Black simply plays 17. _ Qd8 and there is no danger at all. I would give this books 4 stars but to offset Mr. Wilson I give it 5. One has to work to get the best out of this book. There is no introduction of the logical move orders. You have to go through the entire chapter of "Early Deviations" to find out why GMs use the Pirc move order to transpose into the Hanham variation. Nevertheless, this is the best book on the Philidor on the market and it is a monumental effort. If you study this book there is no doubt that you will have better results than taking on the black side of the Ruy Lopez - as an amateur that is.

A slightly off-beat defense!

Certainly, the Philidor is not the Sicilian, and it is not intended to be. But if you enjoy a patient game, playing to equalize and perhaps obtain a nice position, in an opening that is definitely overlooked and underrated, this is a great book to introduce the Philidor. The author explores the major variations, and makes good suggestions as to some of the more difficult lines. He refers to the earlier Tony Kosten bookWinning With the Philidor (Batsford Chess Library), as well as to the LionLion the Black Weapon the system 1. e4 d6, another book devoted to this opening and suggests improvements in the lines given by those authors. Overall, if you play the Philidor, or want a new defense against e4, this is an excellent book.

Good book to get started quickly - great for designers

I chose four stars because it doesn't cover Javascript as much as I expected. The topic of Javascript is quite dense, which the size of the book can't do it justice, but it would've been nice to introduce some techniques in Javascript, like assigning new objects to properties of objects and what contexts are used - things like that. The most that's covered is jQuery, which I appreciated the manner of which it was clearly written and concise. In fact, I was able to memorize jQuery much faster in this book than the jQuery pocket reference from O' Reilly and even videos on the topic.

After going at it for a full week, I feel confident in using jQuery - this is because the author always gave practical examples in how to use a particular function, so recalling the code from memory is easy. There are some nice sections like form handling, and some advice like using the .filter method that will go a long way. It goes over event handlers, animation, and even mobile jQuery design. It's these little things that I liked because it gives the reader a direction without throwing everything all at once along with abstract definitions in order to confuse you. In some areas, Javascript is used to describe what's going on under the hood, so that can be illuminating.

I haven't tried out the section on AJAX yet, but I've been having this little book with me wherever I go to study the core languages.

In sum, I think it's worth it if you want to have a working knowledge of jQuery without moving into advanced territory too quickly.

Awesome Resource for JavaScript Developers

This book has been a great resource. It is small which makes it easy to find things and has been invaluable for me when I can't quite remember how do do something with JavaScript or jQuery. I can usually quickly find an example in this book that covers what I am trying to do with a simple code example that is easy to adapt.

For example, the other day I was trying to animate some menu actions and looked at the animation chapter and was able to easily figure out how to animate the show() and hide() functions. I also used the fadeTo() example to animate enabling and disabling of menu items.

Great for starters!

This is a great reference book for jQuery. It is great for beginners and people who want to learn (with easy examples) how to get started with jquery / javascript. I was able to hand this book off to one of our interns to touch up some jquery ui interactions as well as some basic js bugs and he was able to use this book to help him out. It is packed with examples and should help you on your path of becoming a js ninja :).

A Big Hand for the Little Lady

If you've read Syrus Durham's previous sci-fi novel, "Short Time", then you're already aware that he knows how to generate suspense. With his follow-up novel "Desperate Measures" he uses a similar premise: a hard-driven scientist by the name of Veronica Logan is inadvertently reduced to a tiny fraction of her original size as a result of a revolutionary new process she's developed. This time, however, he adds some important additional elements to the mix: humor, warmth, romance and sterling character development. The result is a moving and completely absorbing fanciful tale that not only doesn't overstay its welcome but might even leave you wishing that you'd had the opportunity to spend a little more time with its (mostly) personable and appealing cast.

Readers whose hearts are set to racing by terms like "reversed polarity of the neutron flow" and involved discussions of how reduction in height relates mathematically to corresponding loss of mass will get their fill of that sort of thing here. Likewise, readers with a taste for eroticism that, shall we say, falls somewhat outside of the norm---one tender scene vividly answers Veronica's question "How would they without her getting hurt?" as she ponders spending time alone with her now-much-larger husband---will find that here, too. People who couldn't care less about any of the above will still be in luck, though, because this is, first and foremost, a touching love story between Veronica and her estranged husband Derek, and they're a couple well worth rooting for. Durham neatly and effectively fills in the backstory of the couple's charming courtship, marriage and eventual estrangement through flashbacks that are interspersed throughout the story. The factors that serve to tear them apart are all too common, even as the circumstances that help bring them back together border on the magical. As Veronica and Derek are forced to make accommodations for the changes in their relative sizes, they likewise become reacquainted with each other emotionally, both of them shifting their priorities and fighting their way towards meeting each other somewhere in the middle of the wide gulf that's grown between them. It's an extremely clever parallel.

There are dark forces at work conspiring against them, though, and midway through the story another impediment presents itself to come between them. To spoil the fun by giving away its identity would be unthinkable; suffice to say it's most unique and makes an already complicated situation exponentially more difficult for the pair. While the peril that little Veronica is sometimes placed in during the course of the story is truly harrowing---especially during an explosive, action-packed climax---the author clearly feels highly protective of her, warts and all, making this an exhilarating adventure rather than an oppressive ordeal. Often poignant but never wallowing in moroseness, with one running gag that verges on the broadly comic but doesn't lapse into silliness, this tale expertly hits all the right notes.

Against all expectations everything is resolved in a highly satisfying manner, and Durham ties everything together with a closing sentiment that manages to be both clever and wonderfully heartfelt. Most highly recommended.

A very gripping story. I'm a big fan of the format this story is told in. A great running gag along with surprises you never see coming. Awesome character development gets you into the cast as few stories ever do with as much success. If sci-fi suspense is your thing, then this is the book for you.

Looking forward to the next work by this Author.

I purchased this book based upon the strength of Syrus's work in Short Time. I finished Short Time early this week and moved onto Desperate Measures and while I'm not a fan of romance novels the fact this story is based upon a common Sci-Fi idea is enough to hook me. The way that Syrus explores the story and the narrative help you to believe that it's entirely possible, in as much possibility that teleporation is possible, can work in this universe. The subtle head nods to other sci-fi works certainly helps this story.

That said I can't give this a 5 star rating like I did with Short Time. There are a few grammatical issues and POV changes that are just clunky and can jar the reader a bit. Not to say this isn't bad. All the characters as believable and likable after their own fashion. It has come a long way compared to the problems I had with Short Time, that said I really want to give this book a 4.5 rating and not the 4 that Amazon forces me to use.

If you are a fan of suspenseful, dark sci-fi with a romantic aspect I believe this story is for you.

excellent guide

This book is an invaluable guide to writing about film. If you've never taken a film class, you need a book like this to get you used to the vocabulary, style and format of film criticism and theory. Numerous examples and lucid prose make this book easy to use and to read.

Pricey but Diffusive Writing Guide

Corrigan's Short Guide has been around for some time, and I've noticed that students have decidedly mixed responses to it. My responses are mixed as well.

It is true that Corrigan tends to wax a bit loquacious, letting wordy and meandering discussion often obscure the really important things he has to say. But speaking as a professor who teaches film courses and requires students to write critical essays about film, I must say that to date this is one of the best books on the market to address specifically the subject of writing about film (I think the best book is Tim Bywater's "Introduction to Film Criticism"--which, unfortunately, is also a ridiculously over-priced Longman title). But it bears noting that there simply aren't many books available which do address this specific subject, so my praise has to be understood in that context. And it's a shame that the book is priced over $40, which is a lot of money for a thin, 196 page paperback with some arguably serious flaws.

The book is divided into seven chapters: an introductory chapter explaining differences and similarities between movie reviews, theoretical essays and critical essays; a chapter about preparing to watch a movie and write about it; a chapter on film terms, concepts and writing topics; a chapter summarizing six approaches to writing about film (history, national cinemas, genres, auteurs, formalism, and ideology) with sample essays and exercises; a chapter on style and structure; and final chapters containing research advice (including internet research) and discussions of proofing, and using / citing sources. Appendices include a list of common editorial symbols, a glossary, and an index. Notable changes to the seventh edition include some helpful advice about documentary and avante-garde films, an expansion of the internet resource section, and more information about film sound. These are all welcome and significant enhancements.

There is a lot of sound advice in the text, and the sample essays are particularly helpful. But the book tries to do too many tasks (at least three big ones) and consequently, it does none of them as well as it could--or should. First, the text is part film appreciation guide, but its limited scope prevents it from effectively competing with books like Giannetti's "Understanding Movies" or Bordwell and Thompson's "Film Art: An Introduction," so any student serious about film criticism will need to read such books anyway, making Corrigan's contributions in this area paltry and often superfluous. Second, the text is part style, proofreading and writing guide, but again, cheap and much more comprehensive volumes like Hacker's "A Writer's Reference" do that task far better than can Corrigan so his effort here is mostly wasted. Third, the text is part film writing primer. This is the task on which Corrigan should have limited himself, given the obvious desire to keep the book small, and this is the aspect of the book that works best. Unfortunately, effort and space wasted on the other two tasks unnecessarily restrict what Corrigan does on this score. For example, his discussions (in the first and fourth chapters) of different approaches to film criticism and of different kinds of essays about film are each limited to a few meager pages. But these are the very subjects his book should have addressed in greatest detail. As already noted, the 7th edition includes improvements in this area, but not enough

In the end, Corrigan's book has lots of scattered insights and bits of advice that are great in and of themselves, but the more pertinent are sometimes under-developed and often lost in a sea of verbosity and diffusive aims. So, for the time being at least, while this may be one of the best available books on writing essays about film, it has its share of problems. It is thus almost as disappointing as it is helpful.

Intelligence and accessibility

This a marvelous book, packed with information and much more accessible than far more expensive books. It's the perfect companion for almost any film course since it not only introduces students to the language and methods of film analysis (including how to take notes) but does so while guiding students through the work of writing a good essay (with great suggestions for doing research). The writing is clear and accurate (with none of the errors referred to by the Kenosha reviewer). I recommend it without hesitation to all students of film.
