Scott Kelby, Editor and Publisher of Photoshop User magazine–and the best-selling photography book author in the world today–once again takes this book to a whole new level as he uncovers more of the latest, most important, and most useful Adobe Photoshop techniques for digital photographers.
This update to his award-winning, record-breaking book does something for digital photographers that’s never been done before–it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly “how to do it.” It’s not a bunch of theory; it doesn’t challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure it out on your own. Instead, Scott shows you step by step the exact techniques used by today’s cutting-edge digital photographers, and best of all, he shows you flat-out exactly which settings to use, when to use them, and why. That’s why the previous editions of this book are widely used as the official study guide in photography courses at colleges and universities around the world.
LEARN HOW THE PROS DO IT
Each year, Scott trains thousands of professional photographers on how to use Photoshop, and almost without exception they have the same questions, the same problems, and the same challenges–and that’s exactly what he covers in this book. You’ll learn:
- The sharpening techniques the pros really use.
- The pros’ tricks for fixing the most common digital photo problems fast!
- How to process HDR (High Dynamic Range) images to get realistic looking images, as well as the heavily tone-mapped hyperreal look.
- How to master Photoshop’s Content-Aware features.
- How to use Photoshop’s video editing features to make movies from your DSLR videos.
- How to process RAW images like a pro (plus how to take advantage of all the new Camera Raw features in CC).
- The latest Photoshop special effects for photographers (there’s a whole chapter just on these!).
- A host of shortcuts, workarounds, and slick “insider” tricks to send your productivity through the roof!
Plus, Scott includes a special chapter with his own workflow, from start to finish, and each chapter ends with a Photoshop Killer Tips section, packed with time-saving, job-saving tips that make all the difference. He also provides four bonus chapters, along with all the images used in the book for download on the book’s companion webpage.
If you’re a digital photographer, and if you’re ready to learn all the “tricks of the trade”– the same ones that today’s leading pros use to correct, edit, retouch, and sharpen their work–then you’re holding the book that will do just that.

Like all his other books in this series
By Al Kunz
Another version of Adobe Photoshop was born so there must be another book on the subject authored by Scott Kelby. And so there is but I have to wonder if life is more difficult for him with the fairly new method of product distribution adopted by Adobe. With the subscription access to Photoshop, notifications of updates just appear on your computer and you download them. I received such a notification several months ago and it turned out to be a whole new version of the program. I noted that a number of months had gone by after that before Kelby’s book was ready for publication. Be that as it may, it’s here so let’s take a look at it.
Like all his other books in this series, it is a soft cover volume, 379 pages in length, down from 485 pages in the previous book which covered versions CS6 and CC. One reason for the diminished size is the fact that several features have been omitted from the book and are now available as “bonus chapters” downloadable from Kelby’s website. I note that the suggested book price has not diminished, it is $54.99, the same as the CC & CS6 version. As of the date of the writing of this review, the CC 2014 Release Book was $33.90 on Amazon.com.
Again, like this book’s predecessors, it is written and published in a very readable fashion with the text and illustrations going down each page in lock step so that the reader does not have to search all over for the picture or screen shot that illustrates the text. Also like its predecessors, the book is task oriented, that is, the reader can look in the Table of Contents for a topic and then find a listing of a number of Photoshop tasks relating to that topic. Each task then covers from 2 to 5 pages to describe the steps required to accomplish that task. In all, the topics, and thus the tasks, are presented in a normal workflow that a photographer would normally employ to process an image in Photoshop. Kelby, in the last chapter, presents his workflow to give the reader a frame of reference for future use.
As previously noted, instructional information for several features has been eliminated from the book and now appear as downloadable “bonus chapters” on Kelby’s website. These chapters include Bridge Essentials, Advanced Bridge Techniques, Color Correction Secrets, Images and Step-by-Step Printing and Color Management. I can’t help but wonder if those chapters were banished to the website to hasten the printing of the book. If you look at these chapters, they are constructed in the same fashion as the printed chapters. Also available on the website are the pictures used in the various chapters so that the reader can follow along with the book and learn by doing, a powerful learning process.
The book, on its rear cover, states that it is rated at an Intermediate to advanced user level, a rating with which I would wholly agree. This is not a book for Photoshop beginners. It is a book for those that like to, or need to, process their photos to a high degree. It is a book of detail on the many features included in Photoshop. For example, Camera Raw, an essential Photoshop feature is treated in three chapters totaling 104 pages. Those pages contain an enormous amount of information on Camera Raw. I learned of features contained within Camera Raw that I never knew existed. To cement them in my memory, I will go over those chapters again. The new reader will learn, however, that the Table of Contents will be their best friend in searching out those Photoshop tasks that Kelby details in the book. With his books, I have found that when I come across a feature or process that I think I need to employ on my photos but can’t quite remember the steps, I check the TOC. This is a testament to the book’s use as a reference tome.
Each chapter ends with several pages of “Photoshop Killer Tips”. These tips are worth their weight in gold. My problem is in trying to remember them all. It would behoove the reader to hit these pages several times.
In summary, this is a book full of Photoshop detail. My only problem with it is the fact that additional detail is now on line rather than in the book. The inclusion of the missing material would have made this a complete Photoshop CC 2014 Release book. As stated previously, this omission may have been a fallout from Adobe’s new subscription structure for distributing product.

Should have been titled Photoshop Camera Raw
By J. Ellis
I am a fairly experienced Photoshop user and I always appreciate Scott's books but this one studiously avoids dealing with a major issue for photographers. Most of us are now using Lightroom and the integration of the two programs is key to our success with either and/or both of them. With the coupled package offered by Adobe with Lightroom with Photoshop CC, I wonder how many of us only the PS CC tool. For those of us using Lightroom as a front end to Photoshop CC, we are left in the dust wondering how to interpret Scott's Camera Raw instructions back into Lightroom's Develop module. For newcomer's to the Lightroom/Photoshop world I would sincerely recommend Matt Klowkoski's (sp?) Lightoom book to help understand how the two programs may be used together.
The book also doesn't deal with some of the new features of the Photoshop CC/Lightroom package such as Behance, the type Toolkit etc and this was disappointing as they are new.
I am a Scott Kelby fan and have almost all of his books but this one is a disappointment for me but, in all fairness, if you are new to Photoshop this book is an easy way to get acquainted ( just be sure to read Matt's Lightroom book too) with it's capabilities.

An easy way through the fundamental of PS CC
By Gilbert C. Pogany
There is not much to add to qualify Kelby's book. Like the previous one I bought long ago, it has the same succinct information and lay-out. It's very readable and very easy to follow. He successfully tries to make a complex system simple and the resultsd are the usual: a book that will be a valuable reference for quite a while. Thanks Mr. Kelby.
