Must Have Reference

My Personal Background: I have studied Korean in the Military and at the College level. Native language is English with no Korean background.

Why this book is great:
Almost every grammar pattern I have run into while studying Korean is in this book. Most textbooks/phrasebooks try to handle grammar in a imprecise. Their goals is for you to spend less time worrying about the details of sentence composition and more time speaking/writing etc. As you start to learn more, however, the details start to matter a LOT more. Questions like: Just what is vowel harmony? Why does the word change after a '(rieul)? are all answered by this book.

Problems:
You need to be comfortable with English grammar. Hopefully you have also spent at least an academic year/year learning Korean. While this book will tell you how to use subject and object markers (and a ton of other particles) if you have no concept of a subject marker, this book will seem like a bunch of grammatical mumble jumble.
Note: You can find this cheaper at sites specific to Korean books.

Obscure & Objectionable

This grammar book is not only esoteric (linguistic terms) and obscure, but it also uses sample sentences with the word "booz," drunken state of being, and other unprofessional habits. Tables do not label or display different tenses of the verbs, and the table titles are not even written in English. The author must have been on booz when he selected examples. A pocket guide with tables and patterns would be more helpful than the crazy examples and unclear grammar in this book! This book is not useful for international learners who are attempting to learn the Korean language and make sense out of the grammar. In fact, this book is not even good for any learners.

Only for the Ambitious

You should NOT buy this book if: 1) you are going to Hong-Kong for a week, and want to get the basics of the language. 2) you already know Mandarin or any other language using Chinese characters.
Why? The first 10 or so words you learn are different kinds of fruit. You have to memorize all these to be able to go on to the exercises. This may be fine if you intend to get a huge vocabulary, but for most beginners, 10 different fruits are not the most urgent need. The book goes on in the same way with chunks of specialised but not necessarily useful words.
The next problem is that hardly any Chinese characters are used, so you get little or no help from your possible previous knowledge of Chinese or Japanese. I bought the book, because it provided CDs with the text, and I still think that's its main advantage. I still haven't learnt Cantonese very well, but I've started using another book (Teach Yourself) in parallel, and that helps a lot.

I bought this book + CDs after I finished another Cantonese text for beginners. If you already have some knowledge on Cantonese, this book really helps you learning more words and colloquial expressions.
One thing I don't like about this book is that all the Cantonese sentences are written only in alphabet. If you already know Chinese characters, it is much easier to remember words and expressions if written in Chinese characters.

Great Course - Highly Recommended but not the easiest to get into if you know NO cantonese at first.

I bought this system AFTER purchasing and using the Pimsleur language system and practiced both systems at the same time and found that an excellent way to pick up the language. The pace of these lessons goes quickly and the speed is a conversational speed so it is extremely helpful to have a small familiarity with the language to really excel with this course. My family is from Canton and my grandmother was my tutor as well. I would have her listen to both language courses and she as a native speaker felt much more confident with this course than the Pimsleur course, which tends to teach more formal speech. I highly recommend it. Especially a good tool if you live near a Chinatown like I do and want to be able to order food or buy items and use your conversation for everyday tasks.

I think this is the only Bessie Smith songbook available (though I'm sure you can find some of these songs in other places). The arrangements are good, though maybe a bit too simple.

My only complaint is some of the missing songs; "Sugar in My Bowl" is noticibly absent, as well as some other Bessie favorites.

The notes may be 'correct', but it sure's not the way she sings them, not even near for her own compositions. If you play the songs as written, they won't sound right at all. The notes are different (not just transpositions) and the emphasis way off. Playing along with her singing is the way to get it right.

A Detailed History of FDR From His Early Political Career to the Fall of France During WWII

Although FDR left no detailed memoir giving the reasons for his political decisions, Daniels has captured his words and used them in the context of events to give us a picture of what FDR thought. The book opens with a brief view of Franklin's early life, but the concentration is on his political career. While I had read several biographies of Roosevelt, this is the first one to go in depth about his early office holding. I found it instructive in light of his later political ideas including the New Deal.

I also found it fascinating to read about how FDR was able to control the information about his polio and was able to act as normal as possible. It's enlightening to see how he overcome his affliction.

On the positive side, this is a very detailed, perhaps definitive, look at FDR. Because there is so much detail from quotes to actions to what other historians have said about him, it is a sometime difficult book to read. However, if you're interested in a comprehensive history, this is it.

On the negative side, because the book is crammed with historical detail it is sometimes hard to read. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're interested in becoming immersed in FDRs life.

The book ends before the US enters WWII. Although the transitions seems rather abrupt when you've been following the history closely, it leaves you wanting to go more in depth into the next segment of FDRs career.

If you enjoy history, this is an extremely well done book. I highly recommend it.

Franklin D. Roosevelt: Road to the New Deal is the first volume in the two volume biography by Dr. Roger Daniels

Dr. Roger Daniels the eminent professor of history emeritus of the University of Cincinnati is the author of this biography. The second volume deals with the FDR administration from the beginning of the European war to the death of FDR at Warm Springs Georgia in 1945.
This book is not an easy read! It is not a book filled with lots of personal anecdotes. A book like this reads like a textbook! It is often a tedious and frankly somewhat boring l discussion of all of the programs launched by the New Deal.. There are countless names to keep track of (Daniels has a bad habit of putting the birth and death dates of the person he is talking about in brackets) and federal programs that boggle the mind of the reader!
FDR was born into the gentry of Hudson Valley aristocracy. He suffered from polio and in 1921 was paralyzed from the waist down. Yet he rose to become a successful two term governor of New York and a four term POTUS. He ranks along with Washington and Lincoln as one of the greatest of our Chief Executives. I give the book five stars due to the incredible detail Daniels brings to the reader's attention. It is a difficult read but it will increase your understanding of the terrible days of the Great Depression and it will allow you to gain understanding of the crippled man who helped America rise from the Great Depression as hope was again an option.

Billed as the story of FDR and the New Deal in his own words it is more than that. It is a chronologic, political history of FDR through the first 2 terms of his Presidency. It is FDR 101 on steroids by an accomplished historian. It is well researched and impeccably written and presented. The Kindle edition is flawless. It is valuable at face value to follow the chronology of events with pertinent observations without the hagiographic spin or the derogation of the efforts by the New Deal to lift the nation out of the mire of the Great Depression that push many accounts of FDR off their trajectory. Highly recommended.
