4 out of 6 Stories are From the 'I can read' Series!
By Rena M.
My daughter lended a book of Pinkalicious 'Apples, Apples, Apples' from her school library and fell in love with it. So I purchased this thinking that I was getting her new real stories (not made up for the 'I can read' series). When I got the item, 4 stories out of 6 were 'I can read' stories! I really don't like 'I can read' stories because the story lines lack depth in order to use sight words. Because the 'I can read' series are shaped different, the publisher made those stories small to fit the page, and colored the empty pages pink. Only two stories fully fit the book. I had the same experience with 'Splat the Cat' book (you can see my review there as well), and I can't believe I made another mistake of buying this! The description should include that most of the stories are from 'I can read' series! For those who are still interested, I will list the stories included in this book so you don't buy duplicates
1. Pinkalicious: The Pinkerrific Playdate (I can read)
2. Pinkalicious: Flower Girl
3. Pinkalicious: The Princess of Pink Slumber Party (I can read)
4. Pinkalicious: Soccer Star (I can read)
5. Pinkalicious and the Pink Hat Parade
6. Pinkalicious and the Pinkatastic Zoo Day (I can read)

Beautiful book at a great price
By ajac0586
This is a beautiful collection of Pinkalicious readers. They are not the original Pinkalicious, Purplelicious, etc.. titles that my daughter also loves. They are fun stories that tell you more about the life of Pinkalicious, her parents, and her brother Peter. There are good lessons about sportsmanship, kindness, and imagination. Our favorites are the soccer and zoo stories. Pinkalicious is cute trying to get her teddy bear back from the monkey at the zoo. She and Peter make a stuffed monkey together to give to the monkey and trade for her teddy bear. I like that the siblings are realistic, yet work together and teach good family values. They are friends, but they also fight and tease each other. However, they are not mean and don't teach kids bad values. I like good books like that. It's also a great deal instead of buying them individually. You get a bunch of stories in one instead of spending $4+ each. And it makes a great gift because it's a nice book. It's a nice hardback instead of the paperback readers that always bend and rip and are easy to lose.

Great collection
By nj mom
This book was purchased for my three-year-old daughter. She loves the stories and the Pinkalicious character is an honest character and very relatable. I had already bought her a few Pinkalicious paperbacks and realized that overall you are saving a good deal of money to buy all the stories in this storybook collection, as opposed to each paperback individually.

Agile Software Engineering with Visual Studio: From Concept to Continuous Feedback (2nd Edition) (Microsoft Windows Development Series)B

Using agile methods and the tools of Visual Studio 2010, development teams can deliver higher-value software faster, systematically eliminate waste, and increase transparency throughout the entire development lifecycle. Now, Microsoft Visual Studio product owner Sam Guckenheimer and leading Visual Studio implementation consultant Neno Loje show how to make the most of Microsoft’s new Visual Studio 2010 Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) tools in your environment.

This book is the definitive guide to the application of agile development with Scrum and modern software engineering practices using Visual Studio 2010. You’ll learn how to use Visual Studio 2010 to empower and engage multidisciplinary, self-managing teams and provide the transparency they need to maximize productivity. Along the way, Guckenheimer and Loje help you overcome every major impediment that leads to stakeholder dissatisfaction—from mismatched schedules to poor quality, blocked builds to irreproducible bugs, and technology “silos” to geographic “silos.”

Coverage includes
•Accelerating the “flow of value” to customers in any software project, no matter how large or complex
•Empowering high-performance software teams and removing overhead in software delivery
•Automating “burndowns” and using dashboards to gain a real-time, multidimensional view of quality and progress
•Using Visual Studio 2010 to reduce or eliminate “no repro” bugs
•Automating deployment and virtualizing test labs to make continuous builds deployable
•Using Test Impact Analysis to quickly choose the right tests based on recent code changes
•Working effectively with sources, branches, and backlogs across distributed teams
•Sharing code, build automation, test, project and other data across .NET and Java teams
•Uncovering hidden architectural patterns in legacy software, so you can refactor changes more confidently
•Scaling Scrum to large, distributed organizations

Whatever your discipline, this book will help you use Visual Studio 2010 to focus on what really matters: building software that delivers exceptional value sooner and keeps customers happy far into the future.

Foreword by Ken Schwaber

It is my honor to write a foreword for Sam’s book, Agile Software Delivery with Visual Studio. Sam is both a practitioner of software development, as well as a scholar. I have worked with Sam for the last two years to merge Scrum with modern engineering practices and an excellent toolset, Microsoft’s VS 2010. We are both indebted to Aaron Bjork of Microsoft, who developed the Scrum template that instantiates Scrum in VS 2010 through the Scrum Template.

I do not want Scrum to be prescriptive. I left many holes, such as what as the syntax and organization of the Product Backlog, the engineering practices that turned Product Backlog items into a potentially shippable increment, and the magic that would create self-organizing teams. Sam has superbly described one way of filling in these holes in his book. He describes the techniques and tooling, as well as the rationale of the approach that he prescribes. He does this in detail, with scope and humor. Since I have worked with Microsoft since 2004 and Sam since 2009 on these practices and tooling, I am delighted. Our first launch was a course, the Professional Scrum Developer .NET course, that taught developers how to use solid increments using modern engineering practices on VS 2010 — working in self-organizing, cross-functional teams. Sam’s book is the bible to this course and more, laying it all out in detail and philosophy. If you are on a Scrum Team building software with .NET technologies, this is the book for you. If you are using Java, this book is compelling enough to read anyway, and maybe worth switching to .NET.

When we devised and signed the Agile Manifesto in 2001, our first value was “Individuals and interactions over processes and tools.” Well, we have the processes and tools nailed for the Microsoft environment. In Sam’s book, we have something developers, who are also people, can use to understand the approach and value of the processes and tools. Now the really hard work, people. After twenty years of being treated as resources, becoming accountable, creative, responsible people is hard. Our first challenge will be the people who manage the developers. They could use the metrics from the VS 2010 tooling to micro-manage the processes and developers, squeezing the last bit of creativity out and leaving Agility flat. Or, they could use the metrics from the tools to understand the challenges facing the developers. They could then coach and lead them to a better, more creative and productive place. This is the challenge of any tool. It may be excellent, but how it is used will determine its success.

Thanks for the book, Sam.

Praise for Agile Software Engineering with Visual Studio

“Agile dominates projects increasingly from IT to product and business development, and Sam Guckenheimer and Neno Loje provide pragmatic context for users seeking clarity and specifics with this book. Their knowledge of past history and current practice, combined with acuity and details about Visual Studio’s agile capabilities, enable a precise path to execution. Yet their voice and advice remain non-dogmatic and wise. Their examples are clear and relevant, enabling a valuable perspective to those seeking a broad and deep historical background along with a definitive understanding of the way in which Visual Studio can incorporate agile approaches.”
—Melinda Ballou, Program Director, Application Lifecycle Management and Executive Strategies Service, International Data Corporation (IDC)

“Sam Guckenheimer and Neno Loje have forgotten more about software development processes than most development ‘gurus’ ever knew, and that’s a good thing! In Agile Software Engineering with Visual Studio, Sam and Neno distill the essence of years of hard-won experience and hundreds of pages of process theory into what really matters—the techniques that high performance software teams use to get stuff done. By combining these critical techniques with examples of how they work in Visual Studio, they created a de-facto user guide that no Visual Studio developer should be without.”
—Jeffrey Hammond, Principal Analyst, Forrester Research

“If you employ Microsoft’s Team Foundation Server and are considering Agile projects, this text will give you a sound foundation of the principles behind its agile template and the choices you will need to make. The insights from Microsoft’s own experience in adopting agile help illustrate challenges with scale and the issues beyond pure functionality that a team needs to deal with. This book pulls together into one location a wide set of knowledge and practices to create a solid foundation to guide the decisions and effective transition, and will be a valuable addition to any team manager’s bookshelf.”
—Thomas Murphy, Research Director, Gartner

About the Author

Sam Guckenheimer
When I wrote the predecessor of this book, I had been at Microsoft less than three years. I described my history like this:I joined

Microsoft in 2003 to work on Visual Studio Team System (VSTS), the new product line that was just released at the end of 2005. As the group product planner, I have played chief customer advocate, a role that I have loved. I have been in the IT industry for twenty-some years, spending most of my career as a tester, project manager, analyst, and developer.

As a tester, I’ve always understood the theoretical value of advanced developer practices, such as unit testing, code coverage, static analysis, and memory and performance profiling. At the same time, I never understood how anyone had the patience to learn the obscure tools that you needed to follow the right practices.

As a project manager, I was always troubled that the only decent data we could get was about bugs. Driving a project from bug data alone is like driving a car with your eyes closed and only turning the wheel when you hit something. You really want to see the right indicators that you are on course, not just feel the bumps when you stray off it. Here, too, I always understood the value of metrics, such as code coverage and project velocity, but I never understood how anyone could realistically collect all that stuff.

As an analyst, I fell in love with modeling. I think visually, and I found graphical models compelling ways to document and communicate. But the models always got out of date as soon as it came time to implement anything. And the models just didn’t handle the key concerns of developers, testers, and operations.

In all these cases, I was frustrated by how hard it was to connect the dots for the whole team. I loved the idea in Scrum (one of the Agile processes) of a “single product backlog”—one place where you could see all the work—but the tools people could actually use would fragment the work every which way. What do these requirements have to do with those tasks, and the model elements here, and the tests over there? And where’s the source code in that mix?

From a historical perspective, I think IT turned the corner when it stopped trying to automate manual processes and instead asked the question, “With automation, how can we reengineer our core business processes?” That’s when IT started to deliver real business value.

They say the cobbler’s children go shoeless. That’s true for IT, too. While we’ve been busy automating other business processes, we’ve largely neglected our own. Nearly all tools targeted for IT professionals and teams seem to still be automating the old manual processes. Those processes required high overhead before automation, and with automation, they still have high overhead. How many times have you gone to a 1-hour project meeting where the first 90 minutes were an argument about whose numbers were right?

Now, with Visual Studio, we are seriously asking, “With automation, how can we reengineer our core IT processes? How can we remove the overhead from following good process? How can we make all these different roles individually more productive while integrating them as a high performance team?”

Obviously, that’s all still true.

Neno Loje

I started my career as a software developer—first as a hobby, later as profession. At the beginning of high school, I fell in love with writing software because it enabled me to create something useful by transforming an idea into something of actual value for someone else. Later, I learned that this was generating customer value.

However, the impact and value were limited by the fact that I was just a single developer working in a small company, so I decided to focus on helping and teaching other developers. I started by delivering pure technical training, but the topics soon expanded to include process and people, because I realized that just introducing a new tool or a technology by itself does not necessarily make teams more successful.

During the past six years as an independent ALM consultant and TFS specialist, I have helped many companies set up a team environment and software development process with VS. It has been fascinating to watch how removing unnecessary, manual activities makes developers and entire projects more productive. Every team is different and has its own problems. I’ve been surprised to see how many ways exist (both in process and tools) to achieve the same goal: deliver customer value faster though great software.

When teams look back at how they worked before, without VS, they often ask themselves how they could have survived without the tools they use now. However, what had changed from the past were not only the tools, but also the way they work as a team.

Application Lifecycle Management and practices from the Agile Consensus help your team to focus on the important things. VS and TFS are a pragmatic approach to implement ALM (even for small, nondistributed teams). If you’re still not convinced, I urge you to try it out and judge for yourself.

Great Book!!!!! A MUST HAVE Scrum/TFS Resource
By T Anderson
I own the first version of this book and was looking forward to the second version. I would say if you want to get familiar with doing Scrum with TFS this is the book you want. It really does not cover the other templates at all. I am not saying that is bad, but it is not what I expected or wanted. I already have read enough on Scrum to last me a lifetime. I wanted to see more on the other templates.

All that said, if you have not had the opportunity to get familiar with Scrum this is a great place to get started, especially if you use TFS.

The book starts out with an introduction to agile, Scrum, and Visual Studio. It then digs into Scrum and TFS with chapters on Product Ownership, Running the Sprint, Architecture, Development, Build and Lab, Test, Lessons Learned at Microsoft Developer Division, and Continuous Feedback.

My favorite chapters were Development, Build and Lab, and Test. The author did a great job of showing all the different features available in TFS and Visual Studio that enable continuous integration, automating testing, and detecting programming errors early. The chapters go into enough detail to give you a really good understanding of the tools available and when to use them.

The architecture chapter did a good job of showing how to take advantage of the tools in Visual Studio for reverse engineering existing applications. It does not however show you how to use them to architect an application. Instead the author plays the "Emerging Architecture" trump card, and writes it off to it not being needed in agile processes. I guess this is ok, because the tools in Visual Studio are not ready for prime time when it comes to designing an Architecture. They are good for reverse engineering an application. I wholly disagree with the "Emerging Architecture" agile approach and believe it contributes to most of the messes that come out of teams claiming to be agile, but I won't ding the book for it since it is after all what agile prescribes.

One thing I noticed is there are quite a few typos. They are no big deal, just very obvious ones which was strange.

Personally I think the book should have been titled "Developing with Visual Studio and TFS using the Scrum Template". That is not a bad thing if that is what you want. The book is well written and an easy read. I think is does what it set out to do and it does it well. It is a top notch book.

I highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn Scrum and wants to use the TFS toolset to enable your team to accomplish your mission.

The definitive guide on agile development with Visual Studio 2010
By Ognjen Bajic
Agile software development methodologies have been proven on projects large and small. Nowadays methodology of choice is Scrum. It empowers multidisciplinary teams to successfully implement complex software and ensures the continuous flow of value through the development process.

This book will teach you how to successfully implement Scrum using integrated set of tools from Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 (VS) and the Team Foundation Server 2010 (TFS) and create automated process maximizing flow of value. In addition to the usual sprint and daily cycles, TFS based implementation of such process also exhibits micro cycles like check in and test. Ensuring the flow by making handoffs between team members as efficient as possible, by automating quality enforcing steps i.e. dones and gathering metrics without overhead at every cycle are cornerstones of this efficient process.

The book goes beyond teaching you how to apply Scrum using VS and TFS. Reinforcing the flow of value by introducing removal of waste (bug debt, partially implemented features, unfinished code etc.) impeding the flow and transparency pinpointing the weak spots in the process, further ensure success of the development project. Guckenheimer and Loje teach how to identify different types of waste and deal with them. They do a great job explaining how to read different reports and analyze dashboards to gain real-time insight in progress, quality and other aspects of your project.

VS and TFS aim at empowering the whole team.

Architects can analyze legacy code or continuously validate the current architecture with every daily build using layer diagram.
Developers will learn how to write clean code from the beginning and detect errors early. Different built in tools like check in policies or gated check-in help with that. Developers write or generate tests, check how effective they are and efficiently use them by executing only the tests impacted by a recent change from the set of all tests.
Testers use simple but efficient tools to find bugs and fill rich bug reports (backed by video recording, debugger level Intellitrace information, test steps etc.). Such bugs are easily reproducible and can be quickly analyzed and resolved.
Automated tests executed in virtualized test environments as a part of the build process with automated deployment are very powerful means to fight regressions.

In the third part of the book, author shares valuable experiences from Microsoft, where the team that produces TFS and VS struggled with quality and schedule. By introducing many of the same techniques described in the book, in the last several years, they regained control. The last chapter shows glimpses of the future tools from the VS vNext.

The authors of this book succeeded in two conflicting tasks: to offer clear, high level overview of modern agile software engineering practices on one side and on the other to dig deep enough in all the tools available in the Visual Studio 2010 and the TFS to show how they support these practices. Everything in an easy to read, moderately sized book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone involved with the software development, irrespective of the role they play. You will learn the proven practices and the toolset as well as the rationale for the prescribed development process.

Exceptional Resource
By Chris Clements
Full disclosure: I am a senior technical writer at Microsoft, have worked with Sam and Neno for some time, and have worked on these technologies for over six years.

That said, take it from someone who has done writing and a ton of reading on the subject matter that the authors cover in this book. It's simply an exceptional resource, written by two people I consider to be among the very best at what they do. Whether you are new to Agile, Scrum, Visual Studio, and/or Team Foundation Server, or a veteran with all of them, this book has something to offer. It is very, very thorough and insightful. A newcomer could use it to ramp up quickly -- it has incredible span across the subject matter. An expert will find new ideas or new ways of thinking about agile software engineering in here as well. The language is clear and easy to understand, the examples are poignant, and it's a very interesting read -- even for guys like me who have read volumes about this stuff. Again, keeping full disclosure in mind, I am recommending this book because I've read it and I think it's an outstanding and valuable resource.

This book helps readers to choose an appropriate word or phrase for a tattoo in the Scottish Gaelic language. Gaelic is growing in popularity due to the media phenomenon of "Outlander" as well as people exploring their ancestry. Many people want a tattoo with a Gaelic word or phrase to tell a story about their Scottish or Celtic roots. But most people can’t find the accurate information about Gaelic that is needed to get a good tattoo. They try to do their own translations instead and end up with embarrassing mistakes. This book can help; it contains a glossary of nearly 400 authentic Gaelic words and phrases, history and description of the Gaelic language, examples of real-life Gaelic tattoos that went wrong, advice on how to avoid common mistakes, and insights on how to incorporate Gaelic words into a tattoo design that honours and supports the culture. The book focuses on language and does not contain artwork. This book is for tattoo enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in Celtic, Scottish, and Gaelic language and culture.

Genius on the Edge: The Bizarre Double Life of Dr. William Stewart Halsted, by Gerald Imber

Now in paperback, the groundbreaking biography of the most influential surgeon in American history.

“Gerald Imber’s new biography is the first retelling of Halstead’s story in many decades and a particularly expert and thoughtprovoking narrative makes the intense strangeness of Halstead’s subsequent career a gripping story.”

—Abigail Zuger, New York Times Science Section

Dr. William Stewart Halsted’s life was fascinating and complex. Halsted, perhaps the most important surgeon America has ever produced, battled a lifelong cocaine addiction and maintained numerous secret relationships while simultaneously devising revolutionary medical innovations. Yet the story of Halsted’s life, one of seemingly irreconcilable extremes, is in many ways the story of modern medicine.

Before Halsted, poorly-trained doctors performed surgery without anesthesia in unsanitary conditions and patients were rarely expected to survive. Halstead transformed the medical practice by inventing local and spinal anesthesia; introducing the use of rubber gloves during surgery; pioneering the use of fine silk thread for sutures; developing techniques for stabilizing blood pressure during surgery; and inventing the radical mastectomy, blood transfusions, and surgical cures for hernias.

Genius on the Edge is an illuminating biography of a complex and troubled man whose brilliance we continue to benefit
from today.

From Booklist
Clearly an homage to the man to whom “virtually every academically affiliated surgeon can trace his or her teachers,” teaching surgeon Imber’s effort is more than a biography. It is a scholarly reconstruction, complete with historical perspective, of the life of a man who managed to revolutionize surgical practices and, indeed, the entire field of surgery, while battling the enduring and debilitating consequences of self-inflicted medical experimentation. To make surgery more efficient for surgeons, safer, and freer of pain for patients, Halsted began to explore various methods of anesthesia, including the then recently discovered drug, cocaine. He became addicted. Failure to kick that addiction played havoc with his professional life and ultimately forced him to turn optimistically to heroin, generally thought at the time to be an effective treatment. The result was lifelong heroin dependence, despite which he was eventually able to not only function but also continue a brilliant career. Imber’s academic style and inclusive approach are solid but may not appeal to all tastes. --Donna Chavez

Dr. Gerald Imber's unpredictable and unflappable biography, an intrigue-filled life story that's also a sweeping pop medical history, depicts an individual who was two different kinds of good - make that, great - doctor. Baltimore Sun
"With this engaging (if spectacularly subtitled) biography, Imber brings into focus the amazing strides medicine has made over 150 years." Publishers Weekly
"Imber provides a few other colorful details about Halsted: He named his dachshunds "Nip" and "Tuck" and was such an indifferent college student that "there is no record of Halsted ever having borrowed a book from the Yale library." He did crack a book during his senior year: Gray's "Anatomy," which inspired him to pursue medicine." Washington Post

A gripping mixture of medical history and detailed biographical analysis.".. " Huffington Post
He provides a vivid sense of many larger-than-life personalities, including those of William Welch, William Osler, Howard Kelly, Harvey Cushing, and Walter Dandy. His powers of description are compelling, and his carefully chosen words seem to let the monumental events speak for themselves. The book is a must-read for residents. The residency of the 21st century is evolving from that of the 20th, but it will be a long time before Halsted's imprint is no longer palpable. Anesthesiology
Gerald Imber has captured in one grisly sweep the barbarism of both early surgery and the manure-trodden streets it grew from. Like Doctorow's RAGTIME, it's evocative in broad strokes .Not just for history buffs, Imber gives any reader a character for the ages. Riveting. Mary Karr, author of "The Liars Club

A heroic historical page-turner
By Angel Steller
Dr. Gerald Imber will change your views of what it means to be a doctor and a patient, to be sick and to be well. While tracing the convoluted evolution of modern surgery, Imber also chronicles the prodigious, twisted career of the greatest surgeon in American history. As he modernized medicine - introducing such life-sparing novelties as anesthesia, scrubsuits, handwashing, sterlized instruments, even while the medical establishment strenuously resisted his innovations -- Halsted himself descended into a dark, secretive abyss of cocaine abuse and closeted homosexuality. Yet Halsted's techniques and his teaching were so unimpeachably sound, they remain the model for practicing and teaching surgery today. Halsted's story is written with such clarity, it will appeal universally - along the way, Imber's tale encompasses, among other matters, 19th-century American and European history, and some commendably high and lamentably low examples of the human condition. It is a wonder Halsted never had a biography before; we should be very grateful that Dr. Gerald Imber took on this daunting task. His impressive scholarship never gets in the way of good story telling. The charm, humor, and authority of the author's voice shines warmly throughout the sprawling narrative.

Strangely fascinating
By ryan morrison
By far the best biography I have read. I did not have to skip over any boring parts or risk falling asleep. It was strange to realize that not only did people not always use sterile practices but that within the last 100 years people did not use sterile practices. Dr Halsted snd his peers were the creators of modern medicine as we still know it, and their story is a fascinating one.

Fascinating look into how modern surgery developed
By Debbie
"Genius on the Edge" is an interesting book describing the medical developments (especially in surgery) during the period of about 1846 to 1922. The first third of the book mainly focused on what surgery was like before this period, on the developments that occurred from 1846 to 1889, and how they affected Halsted's medical training and prompted his surgical innovations. The rest of the book was more a series of short biographies of men who worked with Halsted and the developments they (and he) brought to the practice of surgery from 1889-1922. It also covered Halsted's marriage and how he lived.

The author didn't assume that the reader was familiar with medical terms and so concisely worked that information in as was needed to understand the innovations. He did an excellent job of making the topic fascinating and easy to understand. I found the book a quick read despite the amount of information packed into it. I also liked how the author wove the general technological changes and social setting into the story so we could see how society effected the advances and how Halsted and the others influenced society in turn. While the book mostly focused on American surgery (especially that done at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine), the author also brought up related advances over in Europe.

There were only a couple of brief descriptions of actual surgery, so most of the book probably wouldn't bother those who get queasy by descriptions of operations.

Some of the topics covered were: the introduction of general anesthetics, heat sterilization, and antiseptics to make surgery safer. How medical training had been done and how it changed (both in medical school and post-graduate) under the influence of Halsted and his friends at Johns Hopkins. The creation of out-patient clinics, the beginnings of bacteriology and the germ theory, the change from quick and brutal surgery to gentle, careful handing during surgery, the introduction of surgical gloves, of using cocaine as a local anesthetic, emergency blood transfusion, surgery of the brain, and much more.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this well-written and interesting book to those interested in how medicine (especially surgery) has developed into what we take for granted today.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.

From Library Journal
Ford directed his first film in 1917, his last in 1965. Although many of his best-known movies re-create the mythos of the Old West, he directed enduring classics in other genres. Gallagher believes Ford's oeuvre can be placed in four "ages": introspection, idealism, myth, and mortality. These may mirror Ford's personal evolution, but he was an extremely private, complex man, so correlations are uncertain. Still, Gallagher has deftly interwoven detailed interpretations of Ford's major works with knowledgeable analysis of the man. There is also discussion of film theory in order to place Ford in the proper framework. Many books have been done on Ford (by Andrew Sarris, Peter Bogdanovich, et al.), but this is definitive and possibly one of the best of its kind. Highly recommended. John Ford: A Brilliant Film Director whose Dark Glasses hid Poetic Eyes
By C. M Mills
T. Gallagher has written an outstanding book on the films of John Ford from his primitive Westerns of the silent era through his last film "7 Women" in 1965.

Gallagher includes biographical information on the enigmatic Mr. Ford-tough guy; closet intellectual; painter of superb movie landscapes and all around genius!

Gallagher's main focus, however, is a close study of all the John Ford movies. His commentary is to be read slowly (a dictionary to look up the abstruse words he likes to use can also prove handy!). Gallagher's writing is often academic (using big words and jargon of film scholars), pedantic and obscure.

However, overall he does a good job at getting at the essence of a film's worth. Gallagher helps you to "read a Ford film" giving you new insights into the neglected genius of the fiery Irishman who made the best American movies of his time.

If you want a biography of John Ford turn to the excellent biographies by Joseph McBride or Scott Eyman among others. If you

want primarily a scholary study of the movies made by Ford then

Gallagher is for you.

I enjoyed the book and recommend it to fans of Ford or for anyone wishing to know more about this legendary director of such classics as "Rio Grande"; "Fort Apache" "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" "The Grapes of Wrath"; "Drums Along the Mohawk"; "Young

Mr. Lincoln"; "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" and countless other classics! Well recommended.

John Ford's films
By A Customer
If one is searching for a biography of John Ford, this is not the book. (A suggestion--Scott Eyman's "Print the Legend" Another, with a slightly different emphasis but still with insightful observations--"John Wayne's America" by Garry Wills.) But as an analysis of specific Ford films as well as the themes he used throughout his career, this book is invaluable. Gallagher's style is a bit too academic at times, but he offers some interesting observations (His examination of the structure of "The Searchers" is particularly memorable).

All the bio (as well as analysis) that you could ever need!
By A Customer
I don't think customer Lee Kane is quite right when he says that Tag Gallagher's labour-of-love book is mainly about the films. Gallagher's writing is spare and lean but he gives at least as much biography as the purely biographical books.

“These people of Greek descent were called Etruscans, and it has been discovered that they had advanced so far in civilization, that they afterwards gave many of their customs to the city of Rome when it came to power. A confederacy known as the ‘Twelve Cities of Etruria’ became famous afterwards, though no one knows exactly which the twelve were.” – Arthur Gilman, The Story of Rome from the Earliest Times to the End of the Republic

When people think of ancient Italy, the Romans are usually the first and last people that come to mind, but long before Rome was built by Latin speaking people, the culture of Italy was dominated by the Etruscans. Although the Etruscans may not comprise the core of most histories of the ancient Mediterranean, they exerted a profound influence on the region from the 8th-5th centuries BCE that continued to resonate for centuries after as the Romans carried on many of their traditions. Today, much of what is known about the Etruscans comes from the ancient Roman and Greek writers who had a deep respect for them but saw them as exotic and foreign. As the famous Roman philosopher Seneca wrote about the Etruscans, “Whereas we believe lightning to be released as a result of the collision of clouds, they believe that the clouds collide so as to release lightning: for as they attribute all to deity, they are led to believe not that things have a meaning insofar as they occur, but rather that they occur because they must have a meaning.”

The Etruscans referred to themselves as “Rasenna” in their own language, but the Greeks called them “Tyrrhenians” and the Romans referred to them as “Etrusci”, which is where the modern term “Etruscan” is derived (Cornell 1995, 45). As this suggests, reconstructing Etruscan history is based primarily on the Greco-Roman accounts, but other sources are utilized by modern scholars to create a more accurate picture.

Unfortunately, despite the fact the Etruscans were a literate people, their own histories have disappeared without a trace. Nevertheless, even with this lack of primary sources, the abundance of classical writings about the Etruscans and modern historical, archaeological, and art historical studies can establish an image of Etruscan history and culture that, although not complete, is enough for scholars to arrive at some important conclusions. An in-depth examination of Etruscan history and culture reveals that the Etruscans developed a culture that was as advanced as that of their Greek contemporaries and was also one that the later Romans were indebted to on many levels.

The Etruscans: The History and Culture of the Ancient Italian Civilization that Preceded the Romans looks at the influential civilization that helped give rise to the Roman Empire. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Etruscans like never before, in no time at all.

Learn about the Etruscans and learn a little about Roman culture
By Modupe Hendricks
I found the history of the Etruscans to be pretty interesting because I knew little about them. This book is brief and concise which provides one the opportunity to learn about the Etruscans in roughly an hour or so. Depending on the archaeologists and or historians the Etruscans either influenced the Romans a little or a lot. The Imperial standards, augury, gladiatorial games, and two of earliest kings of Rome all came from the Etruscans. I found this to be a worthwhile read.
