Good Book

I heard you on George Noory the other night. For some reason your manner and what you said appealed to me.

I just got your book. I thought it would be just some entertaining fiction. (I thought it would be maybe 40 pages long. I surely didn't think 555.) But I can see from looking through it just a little bit that it is really something good.

I have a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago in continuum mechanics. I can already see that you put a lot of science into it. The combination of science with religion is very compelling.

One question that occurred to me when I heard you talk, was why the oceans wouldn't drain into the hole at the North Pole. I'm sure you have an answer in the book. (Maybe the ice goes down into the hole, effectively forming a wall. But then if global warming melts the ice, I would speculate that the ocean would flow into the hole.)

I hope that in the future you can publish your work as a regular book. I think you would sell a lot of copies. I would buy one for myself, and others to give as gifts. I think you have a great combination with the subject - along with the old stories, text, calculations, pictures, graphics and photographs.

I think you have devoted yourself to a very interesting and also hopeful topic. And I think it takes courage to propose a theory that 99.9% of people would reject without investigation as being absolutely crazy.

A terrible printing of a book

It's a good story I'm sure but look up from the cover to page 1 and you will see how the whole book is laid out. Starting of sentences and ending before you got to the end. Start a paragraph and the ending might be two or three pages later. I have never seen a book laid out like this without being checked before printing. I would like to get my money back on this one. I like stories about the hollow earth but this one stunk to high heaven but just on the printing of the book. Some parts you could read, others you couldn't.

Once a garbage theory in my mind...

I have to say, this is a remarkable collection of material. I have always considered this topic "hogwash" until going through Mr. Cluff's material. He has compiled a remarkable amount of information that must be seriously considered by anyone with any breadth of context of world history and science. Having studied ancient cultures and languages as well as advanced cutting edge quantum theory (and beyond, yes, there is some unbelievable work going on right now that I have to believe will re-frame much of what we currently accept about the electrodynamic nature of the universe), I have to give kudos to the author for his due diligence. There is some remarkable information in this compendium. I am not one who believes much in coincidence and there are far too many coincidental connections to be made that I can now see through this seeming revelatory work.

At first I thought I had the necessary skills in critical thinking, yet the fact is that such a skill for Nursing is complex and would benefit students should there is a guide that breakdown all of its components for proper assimilation. Through this well written book which detailed the steps and all their logical sequences, it had deepen my critical thinking ability for professional Nursing beyond what was offered by the Nursing Fundamental text book. It covers the basic five steps of Nursing Process and its application from care plan creation to delegation. Full of insights for both inside and outside the clinical setting. And as a first-time Nursing student like myself, I would highly recommend this book.

Great Purchase!

This is a practical guide to Critical Thinking. It is written in a clear and straightforward manner, which I found to be a breath of fresh air, and very helpful in learning how to be a better critical thinker. As a working nurse, I find the field is becoming more complex, which requires strong critical thinking skills. Although I do have good critical thinking skills I have developed from my experiences, I wanted them to be stronger. I purchased this book in hopes of doing so, and find that I am learning a lot from it! I would recommend this to novice and expert alike! A really good buy!

Real life explained to children.

Wow, my Wife and I are loving this series of books and our 2yr old LOVES his llama books! We started with "Llama Llama Mad at Momma" because it was helpful in teaching our son how to behave and be helpful in public. We were a little apprehensive about "...Red Pajama" because some of the reviews seemed to indicate that Little Llama was simply being ignored while he was suffering some traumatic event alone in his room. NOT THE CASE! Basically, Little Llama is put to bed and doesn't fall immediately asleep, which is normal. Then Little Llama bored & alone decides he wants Momma and asks for some water, which is normal. Meanwhile, Momma is downstairs washing dishes and dealing with telemarketers, which is very normal. Then Little Llama decides that throwing a tantrum will accomplish his will and works himself into a panic, normal even for well behaved children. When Momma hears his cries she literally drops everything and comes bolting through the door to find her child in his own manufactured state of despair. The book ends with Momma clearly explaining that sometimes Momma is too busy to come right away but it doesn't mean that she isn't on her way or that she doesn't love him. What a great lesson for children! In the real world sometimes mom & dad are busy but trying. Sometimes mommy is on the potty and baby must wait. Sometimes daddy is watching football and... ok just kidding. Anyway, our son enjoys the rhymes and the amazing artwork, and we love that we can use it as a learning tool.

For those who rated this book with one star - I offer this rebuttal. The mother is aware the child would like a drink of water. She was going to finish a task and bring it up when she is interupted by a phone call. Seems like this might happen at my house. Until the child begins to make quite a fuss, she is not aware he is stressed. I will concede the admonishment may be a bit much, but I chose to focus on the comfort given at the end. The lesson being that just because Mom isn't right beside you doesn't mean she isn't close enough to protect you. My 20 month old son loves this book and we discuss why he might be afraid in the dark and if it is a rational fear and how to appropriately deal with those fears. As with any book, this book provides an opportunity to discuss with your child if the behavior of the characters is appropriate and solutions that may work better.

ADDRESSES A COMMON FEAR - WELL DONE LITTLE BOOK.

I certainly liked this one and the kids I read it to, like it too, which is actually a pretty good indorsement for a kids book. This book addresses the common fear so many young children have when their mom leaves the room at night (I had the same fear as the baby Llama when I was that age, years and years ago...some things never change). The story is done if an excellent rhyming fashion (and, no, my mid-west accent/twang does not interfere with the reading one bit) and the illustrations are great and eye catching. Like another reviewer, I love the facial expressions conveyed here. This is an excellent beginning reader and an excellent one to read at bed time with your child. Recommend this one highly.

Gr 6 Up—William Henry Lane, also known as Master Juba, was a famous dancer in America and England in the 1840s. Myers's final novel uses historical sources to piece together a picture of what his life might have been like. Juba grew up a free black man in the Five Points neighborhood of New York City, and his dancing was influenced by the Irish style. He encountered Charles Dickens after an early performance, who subsequently reviewed the dance in his American Notes. Historical images are provided throughout. Unfortunately, the author's choice to make this a first-person narrative makes some aspects of the exposition problematic. Young readers may not understand what minstrel shows were, and the context of the narrative is inadequate to convey why Juba would have been adamant about staying away from this form but ultimately began to participate in it. Richer back matter would have enhanced the overall quality of the book. New York City's Five Points district in 1846 is a volatile mixture of poor blacks and immigrants from Europe. William Henry Lane is a teenager working odd jobs to make ends meet, but he really loves to dance. Watching the other dancers in Five Points, and practicing when he can, he gets so good that he begins to call himself "Master Juba."

Master Juba is just another entertainer, dancing in return for supper money, until he is brought to the attention of Charles Dickens, the great English novelist. Dickens writes about Juba and his dancing in his book American Notes, and it is as "Boz's Juba" (Boz was Dickens's nom de plume) that Juba performs in England with the Pell Serenaders. Juba quickly finds that, in London, he's turning heads and taking the city by storm with his dancing skills and sense of rhythm.

But what will Juba do when the Serenaders have to return to the United States? Slavery has been abolished in England; in the U.S., it still exists in all its ugliness. Free black men and women are often captured in the North and sent down South as slaves. England offers freedoms that Juba could only dream of in the States, and returning home may prove a dangerous decision.

This novel is based on a true story, the intricacies of Juba's meteoric rise as an explosive young black dancer brought to life by Walter Dean Myers through meticulous and intensive research.

A Story That Will Really Make You Think

Billed as the “final novel” from the now-deceased Walter Dean Myers, “Juba” is an engaging and important look at the racial stereotypes and practices of 1840s America, told via the real-life story of William Henry Lane…”Master Juba” when dancing on the stage.

For a basic plot summary, this book is set in the 1840s and focuses on Juba, a young man who has an incredible skill for dancing. He could fill concert halls from top to bottom with his unique and frenetic dancing style that, even to this day, cannot quite be quantified. Juba is a black man, however, and that alone relegates him to the likes of minstrel shows, blackface routines, and being labeled a “general oddity”. As Juba himself notes on more than one occasion, it is strange for a man to be performing to applause in a country where he could be legally bought/sold as a slave. Juba wants to be taken seriously as a dance/performer, however, so with continued perseverance he travels the world trying to legitimize both his craft and, by extension, his race.

Cutting right to the point, what makes this novel so insightful and interesting is that it delves into such controversial topics as minstrel shows and blackface. In hindsight, society as a whole is quite embarrassed by those proceedings, wondering how we could have stooped to such levels to mock one section of the population. As such, those topics are rarely talked about or examined due to the climate of anger/fear they produce.

Luckily, Myers has no such qualms about “getting his hands dirty”, so to speak, and not shying away from the hard material. Time and time again in this story, Juba faces moral choices regarding the representation of his black race. Should he showcase himself in shows primarily crafted to mock black people? Should he perform for an owner who signs his paychecks but also dabbles in the slave trade? While the story of Juba’s dancing is passable and he meets some interesting people along the way, those deeper issues are what make this book a solid entry into the Myers pantheon.

The only reason I won’t give this book the full five stars? There is a romantic angle between Juba and a supportive female figure that factors heavily into the final third of the novel but isn’t set up properly in the front two-thirds. To me, that failing took a bit of the starch out of the ending (as it seemed a bit out-of-place from the rest of the material).

Other than that rather small criticism, however, Juba is a great read for both YA’s and adults alike. The story is simple and easy to digest, while the themes behind it will leave the reader thinking long and hard (and maybe even doing some ancillary research…I know I did) even after the final page is turned.

Juba! Authentic Historical Fiction

Title: Juba!

Writing historical fiction is hard. You read shelves full of books, study documents, interview experts, ponder maps, photographs, and data. You work really hard to insert authentic details (what color dress would she have worn to the dance? What did he eat for lunch? What bus would she have taken to work?) and then plunge forward to create as authentic a character as possible.

But when you're writing a story about a young man who lived over a hundred and fifty years ago to whom you want to pay tribute, but yet there is little "real" data, your task becomes even more difficult. You have a few bones to build your story around-- perhaps a death certificate and a few photographs. If you're lucky, maybe you'll find a few newspaper articles you can dig up to authenticate your story.

Such was Walter Dean Myers challenge when he wrote Juba! (Harper Collins, 2015)

This book for middle grade or young adult readers, is based on the true story of a talented young black dancer considered to be the inventor of tap dancing. While performing in New York City, he was noticed by Charles Dickens who wrote about him in American Notes:

"Single shuffle, double shuffle, cut and cross-cut; snapping his fingers, rolling his eyes, turning in his knees, presenting the backs of his legs in front, spinning about on his toes and heels like nothing but the man's fingers on the tambourine; dancing with two left legs, two right legs, two wooden legs, two wire legs, two spring legs - all sorts of legs and no legs - what is this to him?"
"And in what walk of life, or dance of life, does man ever get such stimulating applause as thunders about him, when, having danced his partner off her feet, and himself too, he finishes by leaping gloriously on the bar-counter, and calling for something to drink, with the chuckle of a million of counterfeit Jim Crows, in one inimitable sound!"

Walter Dean Myers, in his last book before his death, told the story of William Henry Lane (Juba's real name) using just a few resources: Dickens' writings, a smattering of newspaper articles and images, and Juba's death certificate. Here are a few of my favorite quotes.

Initially Juba seeks dance instruction from an Irish teacher named Margaret. (This particular passage reminded me of a comment my current dance partner--my husband's 85-year-old uncle--made. "When you see old people dancing, they're imagining themselves as teenagers.")
"If you weren't so thickheaded, you'd know they [the audience] were watching you because they want to enjoy themselves, not marvel at you. You ever go to an Irish dance and see the young people swinging themselves around and kicking up their heels and the old people watching them? The old people are thinking back on a time when they were young and they could do the same thing the young people are doing. But you have to give them something they can do, if only on the floor between their ears, if you get my drift." (p. 44)
The reader hears Juba's despondency and realism in the following line. He has just auditioned as a dancer and thinks he won't get the job.
"My dancing didn't mean a thing. The only thing they see in a black man is a clown or a slave. "(p. 55)

Juba finally gets a few gigs as a dancer but when Mr. Charles Dickens comes to New York and watches him, he dances as he never has before. This quote begins with Mr. Dickens speaking.

"...There's a freedom about the way you move that makes me wish I could dance. Have you ever had a difficult time in your life?"

"At times, everything seems hard," I said. "I'm not sure what tomorrow is going to be like. I'm just hoping it's something good."

"I imagined--and I know I'm talking too much--that you must have had some difficult times along the way. I think that's the mystery of greatness and of people who achieve wonderful things," Mr. Dickens said. "That somewhere in their lives they have felt the cold winds of despair, but have kept their hearts warm themselves." (p. 104)

In order to make a small living Juba is forced to make compromises.

Jack [his "fair minded" white landlord] knew how black people were treated in New York. We were second-class people every day and third-class performers when we tried to exercise our talents outside of the black community. What he did was to needle me so I wouldn't give up all together, and in a way, I appreciated it. In a way, I didn't, though, because sometimes he made me feel that when I accepted a job with a minstrel band or put on blackface I was betraying my people. To me, putting on blackface was the strangest thing in the world. I was born black, and yet the promoters wanted me to dress up like some kind of strange image of a black person that really wasn't a true Negro. It was as if a lot of white people had a place in their heads for black people and you had to fit in that place in a certain manner or they didn't want you. They wanted black performers to talk bad, say stupid things, and be like pets. Jack said a lot of white people were afraid of real black people. (pp. 123-4)
Even after Juba was well received by Londoners who had read accounts of him by Charles Dickens, he still encounters this same prejudice from fellow performers.
Huff [another performer] walked across the room and put his nose an inch from Gil's. "What I see with my own two eyes is that I'm not going to make no kind of steady living working for a [Negro]. And that's what I'm doing over here, working behind Boz's Juba or whatever it is he's calling himself. In America you make a living working with white men, and for white men. And I aim to go back to America, back to Mableton, Georgia and make a living. And if I want any coloreds around me, I'll buy a few!" (p. 157)

Walter Dean Myers did an excellent job of bringing this forgotten, yet important, performer to life. Juba's life was full of sorrow, yet it also held love and accomplishment. I hope whoever wins my gently read ARC, will pass it along to a young person who can be encouraged by an inspirational story of a man who, despite many obstacles, followed his dreams.

Willard's General Topology - a must for every bookshelf

One of the purest and most intellectually challenging branches of modern mathematics, general topology is not a subject for the faint hearted. So it was a pleasure when I first encountered one of the best reference introductions to the subject to have seen the light of day. Willard's book remains one of my all-time favourites. It covers everything the aspiring topologist needs to know, and certainly supplies more than enough information for a potential PhD student to choose their initial area of specialisation. The chapters are split intelligently into sub-topics which move at a sensible pace from its introductory notes on essential set theory, through subspaces, products, compactness, separation and countability axioms, compactifications, and function spaces. Many of the "standard spaces" of general topology are introduced and examined in the large number of related problems accompanying each section. And for those wanting a bit more context than a maths book normally provides there's a detailed collection of historical notes for each chapter.

Best way to learn General Topology

Fantastic book, it was the book for my three person presentation-based General Topology course, in which we basically had to do all of our learning from the book, and this book was very easy to learn from. It obviously takes effort and thought to read through everything, but I left every section with a thorough understanding of the topic. There are proofs for all major results, but they leave out the gritty details that you may want to go through on your own, a feature I liked. I can't imagine a better book to use to learn General Topology, or really any subject, on your own than this. From now on when I look for a good book to try to learn something independently, I will look for "the one most like Willard."

Absolutely amazing!

This is certainly one of the best books on general topology available. It requires more maturity from the reader than the usual Munkres/Armstrong standard, but IMHO it is perfectly adequate for a first contact with the subject. It is a dense book, and it does not talk much like other books, but the exposition is so clear that this is actually a quality. Being succint, it manages to cover a lot more ground than the standard references; there is much more here than a one-semester course can cover. The exercises are usually difficult; some of them are real challenges (e.g. can you find an order in which the real numbers are well-ordered? This question pops out in the first set of exercises). The exercises are actually the purpose why this book leaves its rivals far behind. They provide the reader with a deep topological way of thinking in many ways: by forcing the reader to construct counterexamples himself (an essential skill for a topologist) and generalizing the theorems presented in the text, often to explore a new technique or construction. Sometimes this may provide the reader with multiple ways to look at a particular problem, which is certainly an useful skill (not to say inspiring!). A good example is the way the author explores the interconnection between nets and filters, which provide two different frameworks for describing topologies by means of convergence. Most other books describe just one approach or the other, and even when they do both they seldom explicit how they are related. A careful reader who works throughout the whole text, or at least through most of it, will have a better understanding of topology than the reader of the more usual texts. For the sake of comparison, I should say I found the discussion here about quotient spaces far clearer than Munkres's. Willard makes clear from the beggining the distinction between the "quotient approach" and the more intuitive "identification approach", which is the formalization of the intuitive grasp of cutting and pasting spaces. The author carefully develops both points of view, to show in the end they are really the same (in the sense of an universal property - i.e., up to homeomorphism). It becomes absolutely clear then that the first, more abstract approach, gives an effective way for manipulating mathematically problems arising in the second, hence its not-so-obvious-at-a-first-glance importance.

Readers who are already familiar with the methods and results of general topology and basic algebraic topology will also benefit from this book, specially from the exercises. This, together with "Counterexamples in Topology", by Steen and Seebach, form the best duo for studying general topology for real; this is the best option available for the ambitious student and the aspiring topologist. Also, as they are both Dover, the prices are ridiculously low. For a couple of bucks you may have access to some of the most beautiful treasures of mathematics.
