An enlightening and interesting read for anyone!

Sylvia Browne takes a different approach in "The Other Side and Back" by making it a guide to achieving and understanding the lessons she's become famous for teaching the world. It has a few repeated items items from "Adventures of a Psychic", only because those facts are important to know for the in-depth study of the lessons in the new book. I thought I had found out all Sylvia had to teach(from watching her lectures on TV, reading her biography, and attending a live lecture), but I learned SO MANY new things, I was astonished and somewhat embarrassed that I had assumed I knew it all already. "The Other Side and Back" tells us all about the dark side,where the bad people go since there is no flame-ridden hell like we had assumed, how to astral travel in our dreams, interesting (and humorous) ideas and stories about the mind and its potential.I loved this book because it gave an all around revitalizing look at how we can control our mindset and vocabulary to lead more positive, learned lives and finally reach our home with God.

believe it or not...

this book actually did "change my life". I am a recent college graduate who is very scientific minded, but I grew up in a very religious household, so I am at a point in my life where I am quite skeptical of anything pertaining to "God" or "angels" or "spirits", etc. But I have seen Sylvia on Montel Williams, and I was curious enough to buy this book. I am so glad that I did, because whether or not any of it is true, I came away with such a feeling of peace, self-worth, and control over my life, that it was more than worth the price of the book. I have more insight into things I always felt may be true, and I also understand and accept with much more peace things that happen around me and to me. I try now, more than ever, to learn from every experience. The guidance, humor, and warmth make this book a wonderful read. Highly recommended. Thank you, Sylvia!

Finding Solace

I purchased three copies of this book; one for myself, one for my daughter, and one for a friend who had recently lost a loved one. This book does help you find some solace when you are "searching" as I was, and still am, after the loss of my son. Sylvia does present certain insight to allow you to identify and find your own way to your personal quest for answers. Sylvia is very matter-of-fact in her writings, and it's easy to relate and understand the scenarios she presents to get her point across. I did also purchase the audio tape set relevant to this book. However, if you plan to attend one of her lectures, do not bother to purchase the tapes, as the lectures are almost verbatim, except for audience questions, to what is on the tapes. In fact, if you want Sylvia to autograph your book, don't buy it until you attend the lecture. She only autographs the books she and her "ministers" sell at the lecture. In Sylvia's book, "Adventures of a Psychic," she makes comment about a psychic she herself went to see when she was only beginning to do more than private readings. Sylvia was diappointed with the non-sympathetic, show-biz demeanor of the psychic that was bluntly answering heart-felt questions from the audience and saying virtually..."Next!"...without even taking the time to pause and be sincere with the person asking the question. Unfortunately, I must say, Sylvia is guilty of this very same thing with her lecture audiences...too much show-biz...not enough respect for the person truly seeking answers to questions that are heart-wrenching. I attended her lecture "To The Other Side and Back" in Seattle, in August after my son passed on in April. The lecture encompassed no more than the tapes I had bought just previous to the lecture. My daughter, my son's friends, friends from my work place,and I went away that night very disappointed in Sylvia and her lack of concern for the audience. Her granddaughter, although adorable, was not only a distraction to the lecture but an unnecessary part of such a serious gathering. I am writing Sylvia and Montel Williams about my disdain with the "show-biz" aspect of Sylvia's lectures. I urge her to stop touring for the dollars if she is truly tired of touring. She is doing none of us a favor by continuing, just for the money.

About the Author
Sharon S. Brehm is Professor of Psychology at Indiana University in Bloomington. Born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia, she received a B.A. and a Ph.D in Psychology from Duke University, an A.M. from Harvard University, and completed a clinical psychology internship at the University of Washington Medical Center. After 15 years on the psychology faculty at the University of Kansas, she served as Dean of the Harper College of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Binghamton, Provost at Ohio University, and Chancellor of the Indiana University Bloomington campus. She was an Intra-University Professor at the University of Kansas, a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, and a visiting professor in Germany and Italy. Her books include The Application of Social Psychology to Clinical Practice, a recognized classic in the field, and Intimate Relationships, a highly regarded textbook. Her current research interests involve psychology of women and organizational behavior.

Saul Kassin is Professor of Psychology at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Born and raised in New York City, he graduated from Brooklyn College. After receiving his Ph.D. in personality and social psychology from the University of Connecticut, he spent one year at the University of Kansas and two years at Purdue University. In 1984, he was awarded a prestigious U.S. Supreme Court Judicial Fellowship, and in 1985 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Psychology and Law Program at Stanford University. Kassin is author of the textbook Psychology (fourth edition) and has coauthored or edited a number of scholarly books, including Developmental Social Psychology, The Psychology of Evidence and Trial Procedure, and The American Jury on Trial. His research interests are in social perception and influence, and their applications to police interrogations and confessions, eyewitness testimony, jury decision-making, and other aspects of law.

Steven Fein is Professor of Psychology at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts. Born and raised in Bayonne, New Jersey, he received his A.B. from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Michigan. He has been teaching at Williams College since 1991, with time spent teaching at Stanford University in 1999. His edited books include Emotion: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, Readings in Social Psychology: The Art and Science of Research, Motivated Social Perception: The Ontario Symposium, and Gender and Aggression: Interdisciplinary Approaches. He recently completed a term on the executive committee of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology. His research interests concern stereotyping and prejudice, suspicion, and sociocultural and motivational influences on person perception.

PETER BUFFETT is an Emmy Award-winning composer and producer and cochairman of the NoVo Foundation. Buffett began his career in San Francisco writing music for commercials. A Fast and Fascinating Read that Gets One thing about the Life You Are Making! Worth the read...and re-read!

I've just retired and picked up this book to read on the beach in the Caribbean. My husband and I both read it and highly recommend it. Although we loved it, we feel it is an excellent resource for those just out of college or starting their first job, or a high school graduation gift. At a time when it seems like accountability may be at a 'somewhat' low, it puts into perspective that it is up to each of it as the title suggests to plot our life story...whether you start out with a lot of $$ or are trying to break out of a tough situation. Life Is What You Make It walks you through Peter Buffet's personal journey (yes, you may think he had it incredibly easy with Warren as his dad) but the choices he made along the way truly created the life he wanted. We have given it to recent high school and college grads and a young man beginning his first job. The key is getting people to READ these days! Anyway, if you have a nagging desire to switch jobs or careers, are looking to create a different life for yourself, or are retired and what to continue envisioning the rest of your life- the " what's next" , check this book out. You won't be disappointed!

A thought provoking book, written with humility

I normally give a wide berth to the books with such lofty titles, but the famous surname of the author caught my attention. I was intrigued, and Peter Buffett did not disappoint.
This is a book that comes from the heart, replete with personal anecdotes and keen insights from every-day life. The style is not pedantic; in fact it’s compassionate. It does not provide any fool proof ways to the wisdom, but gives you enough occasions when you may want to pause and ponder. If at all, it urges you to find your own zen, however troublesome it may be.
The title of the book sums it up well – there is so much in life to look forward to (and live), yet most of us choose to define it with a narrow perspective, in dollar terms or parental/ society expectations. Read it, mark it, and you may feel to go back to it from time to time, to realign your compass.

The son of one of world's richest billionaires, Peter Buffett received from his dad what many could call a dubitable inheritance: a $90K check at age 19. Period. Peter was raised to expect nothing unearned. He understood from early on that his father's substantial fortune would never trickle down his way, because he needed to find his own path, prove himself, make his own living, and discover his self-worth, self-respect, and the meaning of his life all on his own. His true inheritance was less tangible: uncompromising moral and ethical values, true love of knowledge and learning, and a strong work ethic that was based not on acquiring wealth but on committing to his passion. Eventually Peter carved out his own successful career as a music composer and author, and later also created a way to give back to society by starting a foundation that helps girls and women find equality and opportunities.

Children born to wealth are often passionless or indifferent: they have little motivation to work because they take everything for granted. Oftentimes, as well, parents misguidedly give to their children in excess, trying to make up for their own lacks while growing up. This little book offers many insights that may help all find the right attitude and perspective to discover true passion and joy in their lives.

What's Your Leadership Story?

The story of Herb Greenberg, founder of Caliper, will inspire you to reflect deeply on your own leadership story. Patrick Sweeney is a master storyteller: At times What You Aren’t Seeing reads like a juicy novel and at other times it reads like a Harvard Business School case study. I found myself answering the reflection questions at the end of each chapter to uncover my own leadership story. If you are a coach, you will also find the questions useful in helping your clients search inside themselves for their own leadership story.

I must admit I was skeptical when I first scanned the Table of Contents and saw a chapter titled “Sports”. As a female entrepreneur and lifelong student of leadership I often tire of sports analogies because they are typically about male teams and I don't identify with them. While there is quite a bit written about the Brooklyn Dodgers who were influential in Greenberg’s childhood, I was pleasantly surprised to learn the results of one of Caliper’s studies. Using their in-depth personality assessment, as well as interviews of female leaders in the US and UK, they found that women demonstrate leadership behaviors, such as listening and collaborating, that make them uniquely suited to be successful in today’s global marketplace.

Very engaging book that provides leadership insights for business owners and entrepreneurs. I found this book to be very informative, entertaining, and educational. I was particularly interested in leadership abilities and found the book helpful in determining leadership qualities and traits. Not only does the book Chronicle the life of CEO Herb Greenberg, but uses his story as a backdrop for important leadership lessons. Each chapter includes self-discovery questions to guide you through assessing your own story and where the potential to lead originates. These questions help to guide your own thought processes and challenge deeply help beliefs that may be holding you back. If you're looking for an entertaining read that will help you on your leadership journey, I highly recommend this book.

A Biography the Leads to Insight

This biography of Herb Greenberg does an excellent job of using his story to help bring out one's own authentic self. It is well-written and well-edited, and a pleasure to read. I left off one star because the book assumes that every reader holds theories of psychology with the same level of "faith" as the author and the subject. I found much to apply, but have misgivings on some psychological theories, so some sections didn't resonate with me. Whether you're from Brooklyn or not, it's worth the read!

Action Action and ... more Action?

Amber returns to shake up the world.

Amber and company have just come off their most important battles, House Farrell and Pack Deauville have reached detente with the counterparts in Denver. The Matlal have been contained; Nagas are on the run, the Confederation has been sent packing, and Nobel the rogue has been revealed and killed. The time has finally come for Amber to deal with her own problems. If only it could be that easy... for every problem that Amber deals with it seems two come up in their place.

Diana her chosen Athanate mentor has still not returned to Denver. The FBI still wants to know how Amber fits into the puzzle that surrounds her. Olivia is getting closer to her time of change and Amber still does not have any idea how to help her change to wolf. Her relationship with her sister is broken and her family has never been farther from her. In addition her were and athanate natures are starting to overwhelm her and she's worried that they will start to push her to rogue behavior.

In the midst of all this we come in on Amber finding herself sidelined by the commitments she has ended up binding herself to with her allies. Yet her instincts are telling her that she needs to be in New Mexico. The Confederation has been spotted there, Diana was last seen in the area and House Romero that was allied with Matlal is silent. In addition she must discharge her duty and find the kin of Larry Dixon and rescue them if she can.

I really enjoyed the story but found it a little too action packed.

The characters are not really getting any down time and because we are bouncing crisis to crisis we still are in the dark about just how everything in the world works. In addition the effects from what has already happened in the story may not have reached the entire hidden world. I realize that this is fiction but so much has happened and we haven't seen the full reactions of the world. This means that in my mind we need the time so everyone allies and enemies can come together before anything else can conceivably happen; because I can't see so many of these long lived beings ready to improvise more and more in such a changed world. I was also really hoping that more information about the world would be passed on as we see Amber build her own house and Pack.

The ending was well integrated and showed that no matter what happens the story is moving forward. I wouldn't be surprised if echoes of that event become more significant as the series goes on. So many threads are finished or move on that I wouldn't be surprised if events in the background could or did occur. In many ways this book ended the first part of the series Amber has now entered the hidden world and now must assert her role and work for Emergence.

That being said I am upset how Amber's crisis was left. It's been hanging over her head for the last few books and while interesting in my opinion it doesn't add much to the story. Having her "working toward equilibrium" and making it less fatal would have left the stories just about the same at this point. It sound as if it might be resolved quickly for the next novel which I look forward to because she only has a couple of days to meet the FBI.

Here's hoping that the books keep coming ASAP because I know that I'm hooked and can't wait for the next one.

Now, they are trapped in plots within plots as enemies are revealed as friends, friends as enemies, and death.

As the story continues to wind tighter and tighter, and war becomes inevitable, Amber and her kin, her friends, and even her enemies, walk the razors edge – the edge of death, sorrow, pain and loss – and the brutal fires of a world war between humans, Athenate, were, and adept.
Mark has outdone himself this time. His books have continuously gotten better, but this edition is beyond amazing. If you haven’t read the series, I can’t recommend it highly enough. But this one? This one is the best I have read this year. The hard part? Now I have to wait for the next one!

Sigh. Write faster, Mark!!

Not the best of the series, but not the worst

I really wanted to like this story more than I actually did. The overall pacing was really good and we met a really interesting cast of characters. Amber continues to impress with her depth as a protagonist. Unfortunately, the normal cast of secondary characters was kind of wasted in this effort. And after a really good build up to what promised to be an exciting confrontation, the author ran into the same problem that he did in the second book . . . politics broke out. Much like in "Hidden Trump," the author squashed any real sense of urgency toward the end by having a protracted political debate break out that drug on for far too long. It was like watching Die Hard for 90 minutes, and then switching over to C-SPAN. At least in "Cool Hand," our protagonist actually did have a hand in the finale whereas in "Hidden Trump," she was almost entirely a spectator at the end.

I still really like the series overall. I want to see Amber's personal relationships develop (particularly with Jen, who is considerably more interesting than Amber's werewolf paramour), and it'll be interesting to see how (it at all) Amber's familial relationships are repaired. I would like for the story to at some point move beyond the endless politicking, because the politics slows everything down at inopportune moments.

Which ToC PM book to choose?

If you're looking for a good introduction to Theory of Constraints project management, you really have only three choices: this book, Lawrence Leach's "Critical Chain Project Management", and Goldratt's original "Critical Chain" explanation cum novel. Leach can be dismissed out of hand -- his book only marginally discusses ToC PM and it's the most expensive of the three to boot. Goldratt is "the source", but making practical sense of "Critical Chain" and converting it into usable techniques is a chore. That leaves Newbold's "Project Management in the Fast Lane", and it's the star of the group. Newbold clearly describes the various techniques needed by a project manager to actually USE ToC PM. In addition, he addresses the equally thorny issue of how to introduce these concepts to an organization. And all from a very practical, down-to-earth perspective. If you get only one ToC PM book, it needs to be this one.

Proactively deals with inaccurate project estimates

The achilles heal of project management, especially in product development, are the estimates of time and resources. Traditional project management approaches do a lousy job of solving this. For example, although traditional PERT was developed to do this, it is not used. (In fact, in most environments PERT is not defined as the tool but as a network diagram because of this.) Finally, there is an effective approach to proactively dealing with inaccuracy in estimates. The critical chain approach can accomplish this, and this is the best book for defining what critical chain is.

Amazingly good, but does require more material.

This book is a really good next step for those following the TOC debate. It is the non-fiction equivalent of Goldratt's "Critical-Chain". I do believe however that more could be said on managing multiple projects, and an appendix on practical advice showing how to integrate the theory with common software tools (e.g. Microsoft Project) for people who don't want to spend on ProChain would be very nice to have. But these are really just details. Definitely worth the buy!

Excellent source for teaching spelling.

I have a daughter with dyslexia and she struggles with spelling. In my previous life before becoming a mother I was an elementary school teacher and I found Rebecca Sitton's spelling program very helpful. I was reminded of her program when my daughter's teacher began giving quizzes using the 50 most commonly spelled words. I then purchased this book so I could work with my daughter at home to provide extra support in spelling. This books shows how important it is to have children master the spelling of commonly spelled words in the context they are used. Rebecca encourages having children write the words in sentences and not just individually, ie. Friday spelling test format. She also encourages teachers or parents to take words misspelled in their writing and work on helping them spell the words they use everyday. I recommend this sourcebook to teachers, tutors and parents. This is the most practical spelling program I have used.
